Extreme Land Rover Defender Filmed at High Speeds on the Nürburgring

I enjoy an amazing job, writing about automobiles professionally. Yet, it seems the driver of this Land Rover Defender prototype might be having even more fun. These spy images depict him joyfully maneuvering the massive vehicle around the Nurburgring, skrrting all four Goodyear Wrangler off-road tires effortlessly. I can only speculate about the intent behind this, but regardless, I’m not displeased.

The camouflaged test vehicle seems to be even more intense than the Defender Octa. We recognized that rig as the top SUV of 2026, so understandably, there’s a lot of excitement surrounding whatever this may be. I suspect it’s connected to Land Rover’s Defender Dakar D7X-R racer.

In full rally-raid configuration, the Dakar D7X-R utilizes the same 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V8 that powers the Octa. It is actually reduced in power for the race car, from 626 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, but Land Rover would almost certainly restore that power for a production model since it wouldn’t need to comply with FIA regulations. Manufacturers enjoy taking motorsport variations and offering them to wealthy clients, and it looks like that’s what we are witnessing with this spied prototype.

The race car excels due to its improvements in chassis and suspension. Bilstein created a single-coilover front setup paired with parallel twin dampers at the rear, which complement Land Rover’s “flight mode,” calibrated for substantial jumps. The D7X-R also boasts a track width of 70 inches—almost 2.5 inches wider than that of the Octa. Our camouflaged prototype seems to incorporate all these features from the Dakar unit, and while this vehicle is fitted with Goodyears instead of the racer’s BF Goodriches, they appear to match in size at 35 inches.

I believe this will be a customer edition of the D7X-R that will be sold in very limited quantities. Who knows if it will reach the U.S., or if Land Rover will target Middle Eastern clientele with plenty of sand (and cash) to indulge in. Substantial profits from a super truck like this would certainly offset the expenditures associated with the brand’s Dakar endeavors. Indeed, Land Rover flew my friend and colleague Jerry Perez to Saudi Arabia, and for what purpose? To admire the camels and beautiful sunsets? No, to showcase its 4x4s conquering the landscape and provide affluent individuals with serious FOMO.
