Audi CEO Unveils New Flagship SUV That Almost Included Unrequested Electronic Door Handles

It’s hard to conceive of a scenario where a vehicle’s door handle design would become contentious, yet here we are in 2026. The CEO of Audi not only recognized the issue but intervened at the last minute before the launch of the automaker’s new flagship model.

During a media preview for the 2027 Audi Q9 three-row SUV in Munich, Germany in May, Audi CEO Gernot Döllner informed reporters, “One particular aspect I am quite proud of relates to a rather conventional subject, the door handles.”

Döllner disclosed, “We actually made that change 45 weeks ago, and we were pleased to have the opportunity to do so.”

According to Döllner, the decision to change was made only after he test drove the final validation Q9 models to officially approve the flagship. “We had an innovative door handle concept in that vehicle as well. After our final test drive, we concluded that while it was innovative, it was less effective from a customer perspective than a conventional handle. We were extremely fortunate that we were able to modify it,” stated the CEO.

Making a change of such significance just 45 months before a media unveiling is a considerable feat. Döllner remarked, “Typically, changing that [door handle] takes two years, but our body engineers performed exceptionally, and we were somewhat lucky that it worked out in terms of packaging.” According to Döllner, the automaker had to replace tooling that was already established.

Döllner candidly expressed, “We are genuinely pleased to have these conventional door handles; it’s not about innovation, it’s simply good. Yes.”

Initially, the automaker intended to follow the trend of electronic door handles similar to those featured on the Volvo EX60. Döllner mentioned that the decision coincided with the ban on unconventional door handles in the Chinese market, although that was not the primary factor driving the design alteration.

What about the “innovative door handle” that was excluded from the Q9? Döllner described it as “A small wing on the door that operated through a piezoelectric physical effect. It only required a light touch for the door to open electromechanically, though we will implement that solution on a European vehicle in a different sector; it definitely does not suit a full-size SUV with everyday usage demands.”

The door handles weren’t the only corrections Döllner aimed to address with the Q9, and later with its smaller counterpart, the 2027 Q7.

Döllner noted that the new Q7 and Q9 were the first two vehicles where he made a substantial impact since joining Audi 2.5 years ago. He took customer feedback seriously and implemented significant changes beyond just the door handles, affecting packaging and features as well.

My daughter will be grateful to Döllner for ensuring that the cup holders in both the Q7 and Q9 aren’t designed for small beverages. Her sentiments, not mine.

**Audi CEO Discloses New Flagship SUV Almost Included Unrequested Electronic Door Handles**

In a recent statement, Audi’s CEO provided insights into the creation of the brand’s forthcoming flagship SUV, revealing a distinctive design feature that was eventually reevaluated: electronic door handles. This disclosure illuminates the innovative strategies Audi is considering to improve user experience while addressing potential issues regarding practicality and user preferences.

### The Concept of Electronic Door Handles

Electronic door handles signify a contemporary method for vehicle access, employing sensors and motors to facilitate entry without traditional mechanical handles. This technology can offer a streamlined, minimalistic look and can integrate with keyless entry systems, enabling users to unlock and open doors with a gentle touch or proximity sensing.

### Considerations in Design

Throughout the development stage of the new flagship SUV, Audi’s design team contemplated the inclusion of electronic handles. However, the decision was ultimately shaped by feedback from prospective customers and market assessments. The CEO highlighted the significance of grasping consumer preferences, noting that while the technology is fresh, it might not meet the expectations of all users, especially those who appreciate traditional mechanical handles for their dependability and ease of use.

### Balancing Innovation and User Experience

The choice to reject the electronic door handles underscores Audi’s dedication to harmonizing cutting-edge technology with user experience. The CEO remarked that while innovation is a core driving force for Audi, it is just as crucial to ensure that new features enrich the overall driving experience without introducing unnecessary complications or potential failure points.

### Future of Audi’s Design Philosophy

As Audi continues to innovate in automotive design, the lessons learned from this choice will likely influence future endeavors. The company remains committed to incorporating advanced technologies in ways that resonate with consumers, ensuring that each new model embodies both innovation and practicality.

### Conclusion

The information regarding the nearly implemented electronic door handles in Audi’s latest flagship SUV serves as a reminder of the intricacies involved in automotive design. By prioritizing consumer feedback and functional practicality, Audi aims to deliver vehicles that not only showcase technological advancements but also cater to the needs and preferences of their clientele. As the automotive industry evolves, Audi’s strategy will likely keep adapting, ensuring they stay at the forefront of the sector while maintaining a strong bond with their audience.
