If you were attempting to purchase a Land Rover Defender, Discovery, or Range Rover over the weekend, it’s likely you discovered that option was unavailable. This is due to Jaguar Land Rover not offering these models for sale at this time.
A representative from Jaguar Land Rover confirmed to The Drive that the Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender models are currently under a sales hold and have been recalled due to a concern with the airbag system.
“JLR is voluntarily executing a recall to rectify a potential problem affecting the driver’s airbag system in specific Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender vehicles manufactured between April 2019 and June 2026,” stated the spokesperson.
The exact number of Discoverys, Defenders, and Range Rovers produced and sold during that period is currently unknown.
New models impacted by the recall cannot be sold until the issue is resolved for safety reasons. JLR has addressed the problem for vehicles in production, which are now being assembled and dispatched to dealers. However, previously manufactured vehicles located at dealerships will need to be repaired “as swiftly as possible,” according to JLR.
JLR mentioned that it is not aware of any incidents involving airbag non-deployment thus far. The recall and sales hold are precautionary measures following internal engineering assessments that identified the issue.
JLR has notified the NHTSA about the situation, although no recall or sales hold notification has been released by the safety agency at the time of this publication.
Owners of possibly impacted vehicles will be contacted and instructed on the subsequent steps for repairs. Repairs will be conducted at no cost, and efforts will be made to minimize inconvenience for customers, JLR informed The Drive. The repair campaign is currently in progress and customers can continue to order new models today.
Customers can reach out to their local dealership to ask about repairs, but JLR plans to distribute recall notices to inform owners about the recall.
