Exciting news for drift enthusiasts in the Northeast: Formula Drift has announced its plans to host events at Stafford Motor Speedway in Connecticut under a newly signed three-year contract. The first event this weekend set records with a surprising course layout, a full-capacity crowd, and an all-Irish Podium Finish.
Most car enthusiasts are now aware of drifting. For those unfamiliar, Formula Drift (FD) is a head-to-head judged competition in a bracket style, centered around four primary components:
- Speed: How quickly and smoothly a driver can complete the course
- Line: Whether a driver can follow the ideal path set by the judges
- Angle: The capability to maintain a significant angle while drifting; more angle equals better performance.
- Style: Displaying driver skill, proximity to obstacles or competing cars, and mastery of the course.
At the conclusion of the weekend, drivers receive a score based on their rankings, which feeds into their overall season standings. The driver with the highest points at the end of the season earns the title of “Pro Champion.”
This weekend, Formula Drift had plenty to demonstrate as it kicked off its first of three new venues for the year in its eight-round series. This change meant stepping away from iconic locations like Old Bridge Raceway Park, the birthplace of drifting in the USA, due to the New Jersey track owners’ inability to finalize a contract, likely due to ongoing zoning dilemmas. This allowed for New England to step in, long considered an underdog in a vibrant car culture and located near Lock City Drift, one of the largest grassroots drifting communities in the country.
“We aspire to make this track our new base for the Northeast,” shared Bryan Olfert, director of Sales and Partnerships at Formula DRIFT, expressing his enthusiasm about the three-year deal with Stafford Motor Speedway.
“We will pinpoint areas, whether on the track to create a more dynamic racing experience or off the track to enhance fan engagement or improve the paddock for our teams or partners.”
Formula DRIFT has consistently grown in recent years as it occupies the crossroads of automotive culture, fan engagement, viral social media, and grassroots motorsport accessibility.
During the race weekend, I had the opportunity to follow the RTR Team, known for its Ready-To-Rock Mustangs. “I’m most thrilled that this track offers an even playing field for all competitors,” noted Cody Pennell, Director of Motorsports at RTR.
A fresh track provided newer drivers like RTR’s Ben Hobson (who has faced challenges for points this season) with a better chance to compete against seasoned veterans who have a seat-time advantage, having raced on the same tracks for over ten years.
The gamble paid off, with numerous upsets among the drivers, leading Ben Hobson to a final-four finish, his highest achievement in his PRO career. An all-Irish Podium was also witnessed, with RTR Driver James Deane currently leading the season by a 22-point margin:
- 1st Place: James Deane, piloting the Pennzoil Ford Mustang RTR Spec 5-FD
- 2nd Place: Jack Shanahan, in the Pulsar Turbos BMW 1-Series
- 3rd Place: Conor Shanahan, driving the Red Bull / GT Radial / JYR Toyota GT86, and younger sibling to Jack Shanahan.
We have officially reached the midway point of the 2026 Formula DRIFT season, with the next event set for yet another new location at the end of July.
Full disclosure: Pennzoil, a sponsor of both Formula DRIFT and RTR, invited me to this weekend’s event and covered the cost of my ticket.
