Jeep is eager for you to consider the new Cherokee for your shopping list, and part of its sales strategy hinges on the idea that this compact SUV is ready for adventure. However, the absence of a Trail Rated (a term coined by Jeep, not us) variant has been evident since the legendary nameplate re-emerged earlier this year. That changed as of today.
On Monday, Jeep officially announced the return of the Cherokee Trailhawk and provided the first look at its latest iteration aimed at delivering “enhanced off-road capability.”
Last year, Jeep’s CEO Bob Broderdorf informed us that the new Jeep Cherokee would still retain off-road capability. Up until now, that’s been a promise that has yet to be fulfilled. Nonetheless, Broderdorf mentioned it would take time for additional models of the hybrid-exclusive crossover to be introduced. Indeed.
The Cherokee Trailhawk features a revamped front end with red tow hooks. It’s challenging to glean much else from the close-up image aside from the fact that the main bumper isn’t painted to match the body, but we hope that the approach (and departure) angles are improved compared to the street-focused models available today. Smaller wheels paired with larger tires would seem appropriate and expected.
Don’t anticipate major changes to the powertrain. Currently, the Cherokee is only available with a 1.6-liter turbo-four hybrid engine producing 210 horsepower and 230 lb-ft of torque directed to all four wheels through an e-CVT. A two-speed transfer case appears to be unlikely, but a rear locking differential may be included for the Trailhawk variant. Additional off-road driving modes are certainly expected as well.
Jeep has not disclosed anything further aside from the single teaser image, stating the company is preparing for more off-road capabilities, and that further information will be released at a later time.
Not a moment too soon as the automaker has been somewhat adrift and enthusiasts are hopeful that it can rediscover its path.
