Audi enthusiasts disappointed by the electric Concept C as a potential R8 successor can find solace today. The forthcoming electric sports vehicle is actually not a replacement for the R8. Furthermore, Audi’s CEO recently suggested we might indeed be receiving a genuine third version of the R8.
Earlier in May, in Austria, just days before the 2027 RS5 media reveal, Audi CEO Gernot Dollner informed journalists, “It’s a fantastic V8 engine in the Temerario. 10,000 RPM, truly remarkable engine” when questioned about a third-generation R8.
That wasn’t a clear dismissal, and the CEO appears to know the Lamborghini V8’s redline offhand. Odd.
Dollner carried on without hesitation, “And as I mentioned, we have these possibilities at Volkswagen group to devise different technical options and merge them. And the C sport is an instance where we create a vehicle with personality based on a Porsche platform. And the outcome is distinctly Audi, and that’s our approach to keeping our customers in focus and developing the ideal solutions.”
Dollner wrapped up the subject by stating, “Good idea,” while chuckling. It was one of those “I have a secret” laughs, not an uncomfortable “stop questioning me” laugh.
Just before the inquiry about a third-generation R8, The Drive had asked Dollner concerning the future of the V8 engine at Audi. “I’m quite a fan of [the] V8,” Dollner remarked.
Putting together the clues, Dollner is a significant supporter of the V8, referred to the Temerario’s engine as “truly remarkable,” and knew its redline without needing to double-check, while grasping the chances to utilize various “technical solutions” and “combine them” from the Volkswagen group’s lineup of cars, platforms, and engines.
The road to a third-generation R8 appears evident, and Dollner made no attempt to dampen the excitement or say no when the chance arose in a room full of reporters.
