Affalterbach’s latest masterpiece, the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, boasts a staggering 1,153 horsepower with its tri-motor configuration. This concept-like performance EV incorporates technology sourced from Formula 1, pushing the limits of what a luxury car permissible on the streets can achieve. It’s perhaps not surprising that AMG’s head asserts that, no matter the power source, performance and passion are central to the brand, with the horsepower battle far from concluded.
In a recent exclusive preview of the GT 4-Door Coupe at the brand’s Hamburg showroom, Mercedes-AMG CEO Michael Schiebe discussed with select media the part AMG is playing in the wars of horsepower and acceleration, particularly in light of the emergence of high-performance EVs from China.
“I don’t believe so,” Schiebe replied when queried if the horsepower wars had concluded. “In recent years, especially now as we embrace the electric age, we can talk about astonishing performance and horsepower figures. You’ve already seen the horsepower we’re discussing [regarding the new AMG GT 4-Door Coupe].
“I foresee that acceleration, like 0-60, will be less distinct in the future as many electric vehicles will accelerate rapidly. This is where the AMG.EA [Electric Architecture] differentiates itself entirely, as the V8 mode and our simulated gear shifts offer a full 360 experience that embodies driving dynamics, design, and the need for technology when wielding such power,” he noted.
Currently, the most potent combustion AMG is the SL63 S E Performance Roadster, generating 805 hp. Its twin-turbocharged V8 engine is utilized throughout the AMG range, though its nearest counterpart in power is the S63 E Performance sedan, producing 791 hp. Evidently, even at that stage, the gasoline-powered AMGs still lag far behind the new GT 4-Door Coupe’s 1,153 hp.
That being said, Schiebe clarified that the focus isn’t solely on the horsepower figure or the 0-60 metric. The entirety must provide a pleasurable driving experience with the proper tools, and with such power, the right software is essential to utilize it effectively and sensibly.
“Instruments like the AMG Race Engineer ensure that you can truly harness this power and performance on the road, so I don’t anticipate a decrease [in hp], although I acknowledge that in China, there have been discussions about the pace at which cars can [or should] accelerate. So we’ll see what evolves,” he remarked.
“In the short term, I envision us getting progressively better in the performance domain. This implies enhanced performance, potentially lighter vehicles, advanced technology, and improved driving dynamics. We are in this race, and we aim to lead it,” Schiebe stated.
