Forget everything you’ve ever seen on any Mercedes in recent decades and start fresh. The 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe has arrived, and just take a look at it. I know some of you might have initial reservations, and that’s understandable. Personally, I found it odd upon first viewing the images. However, experiencing it in real life changed my perspective: it’s incredibly impressive. It resembles a concept vehicle available for purchase, and that’s because it essentially is.
The new GT 4-Door Coupe is a top-tier electric vehicle, drawing its striking aesthetics from a prototype that achieved an astonishing record last year. You may recall reading in August that an AMG GT XX covered a continuous distance of 24,901 miles in seven days and 13 hours at an average speed of 186 mph. This is the evolution of that record-breaking car, and while some of its more extreme characteristics haven’t carried over—like the absence of a rear window, the massive grille, and a solid carbon dashboard—this remains the most audacious vehicle Mercedes or AMG has produced in a long while. Even if it’s not to your taste, I believe it takes bravery to make such a bold statement in today’s market, and that’s precisely what they’ve done here.
The specifications for the production variant are equally impressive. An F1-inspired 800-volt battery with directly cooled cylindrical cells allows the GT to excel in both short bursts and long journeys. As Mercedes states, it can achieve sprinter-like performance over marathon-like distances. One of the engineers I consulted in Germany explained that everyone is aware EVs can provide rapid acceleration and excel in those “sprints.” But, like any true AMG, this vehicle has to perform at high speeds on the autobahn consistently, recharge in the time it takes to grab a coffee, and then return to the autobahn without sacrificing performance in speed, range, or overheating.
In terms of power, it certainly doesn’t lack. Three electric motors—two on the rear axle and one up front—generate a total of 1,153 horsepower. To put this in perspective, the GT produces all this power while weighing in at 5,420 pounds. Earlier this year, I experienced the Porsche Cayenne Electric which was astonishingly quick (it honestly hurt my neck), and it produces around 20 fewer horsepower while being approximately 400 pounds heavier! The Benz is poised to be overwhelmingly powerful.
The exterior design is certainly divisive, especially in that highlighter yellow hue. I had the chance to examine two different models up close in Hamburg this month, both captured here. These two models showcased different exterior and interior features. The yellow variant, for instance, sports a light-up grille, which is more accurately described as a light-up fascia, given it includes a light bar that connects the headlights, alongside the more compact of the two offered rear diffusers. The white variant has a traditional grille and fascia, but its standout feature is the massive rear diffuser, which extends to optimize aerodynamics at high speeds.
The cabin is indeed equipped with numerous screens, as is the trend these days, but fortunately, it doesn’t have the Superscreen I critiqued in my recent review of the updated S-Class. I find the interior quite appealing, particularly the driver-centric cockpit, the stylish stitching on the door panels, the floating door armrests, and the overall cabin aesthetic, which definitely exudes concept car vibes.
The design of the air vents and several knobs in the center console strikes a somewhat rugged tone, but I don’t find them unappealing. Everything is integrated, and the entire cabin functions well. On the subject of the cabin, it surprisingly offers ample space and comfort, with even the rear seats providing plenty of headroom for individuals over six feet tall.
Mercedes invested significant effort into crafting an audio profile that aligns with the GT’s aesthetics and performance. While it certainly channels the essence of a genuine AMG V8, it doesn’t feel cheap or over-the-top. It complements the robust appearance and feel of the car, and, as I’ve mentioned, having an audio backdrop (along with gear shifting) in an EV enhances the overall driving experience.
Mercedes contends that the GT can accelerate from 0-60 mph in a mere 2.0 seconds and reach 0-124 mph in 6.4 seconds. Its maximum speed, when fitted with the AMG Performance Package, is 184 mph. Details on range and pricing will be disclosed later this year, as we approach the car’s release date.
