You’re familiar with the saying, “Muscle is heavier than fat,” right? You’ll be hearing it more frequently in the upcoming months due to Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis and his high-octane team, striving to bounce back from a few challenging years by introducing three new V8 street trucks under a classic name. Introducing the 2027 Ram Rumble Bee.
Ram’s reimagined performance pickup will be available in three variations: the base model featuring a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 generating 395 horsepower, the Rumble Bee 392 with the company’s fantastic 6.4-liter naturally aspirated V8 producing 470 hp, and of course, the Ram SRT Rumble Bee equipped with a supercharged 6.2-liter Hellcat V8 delivering an impressive 777 hp. Importantly for its street truck appeal, all models offer the previously unavailable combination of the smaller Quad Cab and short bed, resulting in a wheelbase that’s over a foot shorter than usual.
Kuniskis recognizes that this concept isn’t original. He was the first to admit that not only has this been attempted before, but it didn’t succeed last time, and there are numerous reasons for that. To start, the last occurrence was nearly 20 years ago, during the era of the F-150 Lightning, the original Ram Rumble Bee, Chevy’s Silverado SS, and the top of the line half-ton contender, the Viper-powered Ram SRT-10.
Pop Quiz: When was the last instance Mopar installed an aluminum engine in an SRT-labeled truck? Admittedly, this setup works better if I don’t reveal the answer immediately. Apologies to Mr. Kuniskis, but as cool as a Hemi-powered street truck might sound, it will never reach the Viper-powered Ram cool. That’s a stance I’ll firmly stand by.
Before you start checking RAM SRT-10 prices, let me remind you why Kuniskis sees it as a fail: While undeniably great, the 505-horsepower, V10-powered pickup missed the mark on truck-related functionality. The enthusiast-spec, short-cab version with the manual transmission never achieved a substantial tow rating; meanwhile, the automatic quad cab could handle a respectable (especially for two decades ago) 7,500 pounds.
This time, Ram states there’s no more guesswork involved. There’s only one transmission option, the eight-speed automatic. All you need to do is select your engine. Want to tow your 8,500-pound trailer to the lake, launch your boat, then race to bracket night at the local drag strip and scorch the quarter-mile without a tire swap? Then you, my friend, might be in the market for a muscle truck.
So, what exactly defines a muscle truck? Since Ram has this niche to themselves, their product team is somewhat inventing this concept on the fly, but a simple formula has emerged: Start with a standard half-ton, cut 13 inches off the overall length, add a V8, and mix thoroughly. Which V8, you inquire? Freakin’ all of ’em, chief!
The 5.7
The base Rumble Bee comes equipped with Ram’s classic 5.7-liter Hemi V8, providing 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. Four-wheel drive is standard, but you receive only a single-speed transfer case (no low range) and a final drive ratio of 3.92:1. Regardless of which Rumble Bee you choose, it incorporates an immediate RWD mode for those big, smoky burnouts. They are also equipped with launch control, should you actually want to utilize those tires for their intended purpose.
Both the 5.7 and 392 models boast a standard steel suspension, but it’s distinct from the base 1500’s due to the shortened frame. Only the SRT model is equipped with complete air suspension as standard, though it is an option for the mid-range 392.
The 392
Indeed, we’re getting the 6.4 in the light-duty frame—a shortened light-duty frame at that. Don’t get your hopes too high; these trucks still weigh around 6,000 pounds. You receive a robust 470 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque from the hefty V8, and it shares the same 3.92:1 rear end as the 5.7.
Initially, the 392 appears to be merely an engine upgrade, but this is also the first variant that unlocks the Rumble Bee’s Track Pack option.
What does a “track pack” entail in a pickup? Air springs, to start with. The adjustable suspension can lower the truck even further for improved handling and softens the ride when you’re not pushing it. The track pack also includes two additional drive modes to the SRT’s options— “track” (surprise) and a power-limiting “valet” mode. With the tire and suspension enhancements, track pack models can achieve 0.89 g of lateral grip. The best Car & Driver managed from the previous TRX was 0.7g.
There are additional perks as well. Ram refers to the track pack’s 16.1-inch front discs as “sombrero-sized.”
The SRT
Indeed, that’s a Hellcat—all 777 horsepower of it. And a TRX this is not. Ram’s large off-road beast sacrifices considerable on-road capabilities for its prowess in rough terrains. The Rumble Bee does not need to concern itself with such trivialities. While the TRX features all-terrain tires providing more protection than a flak jacket, the Rumble Bee is equipped with street performance tires—and the broadest rear tires fitted to any model in the Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram lineup since the Viper’s discontinuation.
If you’re a Mopar enthusiast, the figures will likely ring a bell. The 6.2-liter, supercharged V8 generates 680 lb-ft of torque along with its colossal power rating. As previously noted, the track pack is optional on the 392; it’s standard on the SRT. And while “noisy” may overshadow “quick” in a realm of Rivians and Hummer EVs, the SRT is certainly not slow. According to Ram, it will clear the quarter-mile in 11.6 seconds. That’s a full second quicker than the Escalade-V and barely half a second slower than Car & Driver’s fastest run in the previous generation GT500. That’s flying.
The Hellcat-enabled Rumble Bee crowns a lineup that exclusively features V8 engines, all set for speed—hot, exhilarating, and impressive speed. Since these are shipped with proper performance tires, they possess suitably uncapped top speeds; Ram expresses a desire for the SRT to reach 170 mph at maximum.
Yet, despite the high outputs, aggressive designs, and reduced lengths, these remain pickup trucks first and foremost. My towing example above wasn’t selected at random; Ram fully anticipates owners to use these vehicles as utilitarian tools. At 88-90 inches wide, they barely fit within what used to be a standard-width 96-inch garage door. Given they occupy that much space, they ought to provide at least some functionality, right?
Certainly, you have the short bed with the quad cab, and even though they’re not designed for off-roading, all three Rumble Bees come standard with four-wheel drive; you’re just not receiving a two-speed transfer case. Add snow tires, and you’ll become a stoplight champion 365 days a year.
And that leads us to a potential contentious point: the cab. Kuniskis anticipates some discontent from the single-cab enthusiasts, but he asserts the market has progressed. Despite the loud calls from enthusiasts for a single-bench option, ultimately, 97% of truck purchasers choose family cabs.
“They’re expressing interest, but they’re not purchasing,” Kuniskis stated.
