However, form and function must occasionally intertwine. Such is the case with this Tatra Phoenix semi truck featuring 16-wheel drive, giving it a look akin to a hundred-legged centipede.

It certainly doesn’t do any favors that the cab has a short hood. Instead, positioned over the engine, the truck seems to be rising on its hind legs as if it’s about to snatch an ant or a worm. Yikes, it gives me the chills!

Tatra acknowledges the insect inspiration. “One of these multi-axle vehicles [sic], known as ‘Centipedes,’ provide a solid foundation for various specialized superstructures, such as cranes, drilling equipment, or aerial work platforms,” the manufacturer shared on Instagram.

One of these has already been dispatched to Australia, where it will support a Bronto Skylift aerial platform. Depending on the model, these can be utilized to service tall buildings and even large windmills. You can see why they’d require a sturdy base, and 16 wheels will definitely assist with that.

The trucks should also be quite adept at navigating loose soil with eight driven axles. Naturally, you wouldn’t want to venture into excessively muddy terrain where the weight of the rig might cause it to sink. But there’s no reason to be wary of a bit of grass or mud with a 12.9-liter Paccar turbodiesel powering your vehicle. (The Tatra Phoenix is also offered with 6.7-liter and 10.8-liter Paccar engines, but I presume this hefty one only features the largest engine.)
