The demise of the electric Volkswagen ID Buzz was evidently overstated and didn’t endure for long. The electric bus has made a comeback.
On Thursday, Volkswagen unveiled the 2027 ID Buzz, indicating the model’s return after a pause for the 2026 model year in the U.S. market, featuring a new trim range and a crucial addition: a sleeping setup for those aiming to camp in their bus.
The comeback of the ID Buzz includes the new Tourer 4Motion trim. This fresh version is a derivative of the Euro-spec “Good Night Package” tailored for the new region. Selecting the Tourer introduces a fold-out mattress with a platform to rest upon (at last), window shades, front window ventilation panels, and Overnight Mode software that Volkswagen claims modifies interior and exterior functionalities to facilitate overnight usage of the vehicle. It seems we will have to wait for additional specifics on the implementation of this.
Furthermore, the Tourer includes an exterior table and chairs (presumably VW-branded) for camping enthusiasts who perhaps lack these essentials.
The Tourer trim also comes equipped with a retractable tow hitch, captain’s chairs, an electrochromic roof, surround-view camera system, and 20-inch dark graphite wheels with black discs.
The new Tourer trim fits into the updated trim lineup between the mid-tier Pro S 4Motion and premium Pro S Plus 4Motion, the latter of which now features 21-inch wheels. A base Pro S RWD serves as the entry-level option in the lineup. Every ID Buzz will now be fitted with a Tesla-like NACS charging port.
Volkswagen acknowledged feedback regarding the absence of two-tone paint options and has fully embraced the retro design features. Every ID Buzz will now come with two-tone paint. Additionally, a Candy White over Cherry Red combination with white wheels designed to evoke the classic Type 2 Microbus color scheme has been added to the offerings.
Volkswagen has not provided any details on pricing or driving range for the 2027 ID Buzz, nor mentioned when precisely the electric bus will be available in showrooms.
The absence of the Tourer option at launch, allowing owners to sleep and camp with their electric bus from the beginning, is a remarkable miscalculation, but at least VW has addressed the concern. Better late than never, one might say.
