“Waiting is not simply vacant anticipation. It possesses the internal assurance of achieving the objective.” ~I Ching
In contemporary Western culture, waiting is often viewed negatively. It’s no wonder I had to refer to an ancient Chinese text (the I Ching) to find an appropriate quote to commence this article. We aren’t fond of waiting! It’s much simpler to discover quotes online about “seizing the moment” and creating an outcome.
I’ve experienced impatience for a considerable part of my life. I yearned for things to happen to me! During my twenties, I had a clear agenda: complete my education, embark on my career, marry, and start a family. So I declared a major and methodically checked off my objectives. When it came time to marry, I selected the most fitting individual available and proceeded.
I truly didn’t grasp the concept of waiting. I believed it was something you engaged in if you lacked bravery or commitment. It felt like merely an excuse to avoid taking action. I have learned differently now.
What I’ve come to understand is that waiting is one of our most potent resources for crafting the life we desire.
The ego, or mind, feels highly uneasy with waiting. This part of you practically screams, “Take action! Anything is preferable to inaction!” Additionally, since we are a society driven by ego, you will hear numerous external voices supporting that sentiment.
The mind despises uncertainty and would rather err than exist in a state of “not knowing” while the right path reveals itself.
I adore the term that encapsulates this realm of uncertainty: liminal. A liminal space exists at the edge or threshold between potentialities. It represents a realm of sheer possibility: we could move in any direction from here. Bright lights and clear signs do not illuminate the path instructing “Go this way.”
Liminal spaces can be profoundly uncomfortable, and many of us tend to race through them as swiftly as possible.
If we choose to slow down instead, the environment gradually clarifies, much like when your eyes adapt to a dimly lit room. We begin utilizing all our senses. The ego yearns for a brightly lit highway to the future, yet real life resembles a maze. We take a step or two in a particular direction before encountering another junction. Progressing requires an entirely distinct skill set, with waiting being one of the most crucial.
Everything has its rightful timing, and it’s often not the timing we desire (now—or even yesterday). Certain processes occur subconsciously, within ourselves and others, preparing us for the subsequent phase. Interestingly, when the moment to act finally arrives, it typically carries a sense of inevitability, as if it was always destined to be this way.
Reflect on your life and you’ll notice this pattern. First, examine the decisions you forced. How did those fare? Next, identify moments when you “knew” what to do, without a second thought. What transpired then?
The essence of the second type of decision is waiting for that profound sense of inner knowing.
This doesn’t imply you’re certain everything will unfold exactly as you wish it to. Or that you won’t experience fear. However, there is a palpable sense of “yes, this is the moment” in your body, reminiscent of the instinctive urge that migratory birds feel when it’s time to take flight. They don’t loiter debating whether to leave, consulting maps or calendars. They just go when the time is right.
We are animals as well—we possess and can hone that inner sensitivity that allows us to intuitively know what action to take when the moment is appropriate. However, to realize that, we must detach from the mind. Thinking is beneficial up to a certain extent, but we often extend it far beyond that limit.
We repeatedly analyze various options, attempting to forecast the future based solely on our hopes and fears.
We converse endlessly with others about our next steps, anticipating that they possess the answers we seek (and, ideally, trying to achieve consensus).
We deliberate on what we “should” do based on numerous external criteria: common sense, morality, religious beliefs, family values, finances, and so forth.
And then we typically sum it all up and take our best shot.
A more effective approach is to evaluate what you do know (and, even more crucially, what you don’t know) and then… wait.
If there’s a course of action that resonates with you, even if it seems unrelated to your current question, pursue it! Then wait once more for another impulse to act. Wait actively rather than passively. This entails keeping your inner senses alert to urges or intuitions. Anticipate that clarity will emerge. As the I Ching advises, wait with the “inner certainty of reaching the goal.”
This is not akin to the vacillation and procrastination that occur when we want to embark on something new but hesitate to leap into the unknown. If your intuition is guiding you in a particular direction while your mind is urging you to halt, by all means, disregard your mind.
There exists a subtle yet tangible distinction between the sensation of fear (which impedes you from pursuing something you yearn to do) and reservations (which alert you that a seemingly appealing decision isn’t right for you).
In either instance, seek and trust that profound sense of inner knowing, even if your thoughts contradict it. A friend once shared that her father’s best advice to her was, “Choosing to marry should be the simplest decision of your life.” How I wish I had understood that when I made my own (significantly conflicted) choice!
My mind insisted this was the rational course, and he was indeed a good person. My instincts, however, were far from on board. I distinctly remember the numerous internal debates I engaged in about whether to wed him and even the dreams I had that unveiled my inner hesitation. Regrettably, I favored my thoughts over my feelings.
Now I recognize this: If you find yourself trying to convince yourself about something, attempt waiting instead. Clarity will emerge if you allow some time for it to evolve.
Disregard that inner voice urging you to make a decision now. Don’t hasten through life. Spend time in the liminal spaces and observe what becomes evident as you embrace uncertainty. Learn to trust your instincts over your intellect. Have confidence that the appropriate path will manifest at the perfect moment. And then, when the time is right, simply take action, as effortlessly and naturally as birds take to the skies.

3. **Accepting Delayed Gratification**: Learning to postpone gratification can refine patience. This can be practiced in minor ways, such as resisting the impulse to check notifications immediately or waiting before replying to messages. Over time, these small efforts can cultivate overall patience.
4. **Reflective Journaling**: Keeping a journal to reflect on experiences during uncertain times can yield significant insights. Writing about feelings, thoughts, and reactions aids individuals in processing emotions and developing a more patient viewpoint.
5. **Seeking Support**: Connecting with supportive friends, family, or professionals can create a sense of community during uncertain times. Sharing experiences and seeking advice allows individuals to feel less isolated and more patient in their approach to challenges.
