Noises That Encourage Mental Serenity

Recently, I had the chance to participate in an online workshop titled Sound as Medicine with Phyllicia Victoria, organized by the Omega Institute, and it was truly a wonderful experience.

If you’ve followed my earlier emails, you might be aware that I’ve been navigating the toughest phase of my adult life for the last eighteen months.

I have traveled across the country several times to support my father during his brain cancer treatment. Simultaneously, I’ve been homeschooling my eldest son, adjusting to changes in my field, and in recent weeks, dealing with estrangement from someone very dear to me.

Life has been heavy, overwhelming, and unyielding, and I’ve relied on my self-care practices, such as hiking in nature and reading in the bathtub, to maintain a sense of balance.

After this workshop, I now believe that sound baths should definitely be a consistent part of my self-care routine.

To start, let me tell you about Phyllicia—an artist, yoga instructor, reiki practitioner, and sound healer. I read on her website that she grew up feeling fragmented, isolated, and undeserving, struggling with trust, and I immediately felt a connection as I could relate to her story.

She began leading sound baths because she recognized how sound helped calm her mind and reduce the internal noise.

That’s precisely what this workshop provided for me. The blend of Phyllicia’s calming voice, her encouraging words, and the deep, hypnotic sounds created a genuinely transcendent experience.

Following the practice, she guided us through gentle movements and stretches, then encouraged us to reflect on our meditation in our journals.

I began by jotting down several words that sprang to mind:

  • Release
  • Peace
  • Spaciousness
  • Ease
  • Clarity
  • Calmness
  • Gratitude

Then I penned the following:

I experienced a profound sense of relief from the anxious thoughts that had been consuming me previously. The sound transported me in ways that words could not. I felt the vibrations resonating deep within, as if they were purging the chaos of my own mind and allowing me to simply exist, free from judgment.

When I perceived other sounds—some I believe originated from her surroundings and some from my own, like my father moving about and switching on the faucet in the kitchen—my mind told me, “No judgment—just new sounds.”

I reminded myself to simply acknowledge them, entwined with the soothing sounds of her singing bowls and chimes, and then to release them without thinking they “shouldn’t” have been part of the experience.

And I reflected on what a remarkable practice that is for life. Frequently, we hear more dissonance than harmony throughout our days, but at times, the opposite is true. It’s an incredible gift to train the mind to perceive dissonance without losing oneself in the narrative, thereby allowing us to refocus on what is beautiful and healing.

The journaling exercise concluded here, and I chose not to participate in the Q&A afterward so I could remain in the mental space I had fostered.

I’ve learned that sound baths can not only soothe the nervous system and alleviate stress, but they may also assist in relieving tension and physical discomfort. I can understand why. I finished my session feeling profoundly relaxed, both physically and mentally, and truly better prepared to face whatever the day might bring.

I am thankful for my recent collaboration with Omega, as I genuinely appreciate their offerings.

I also value that they have compiled a page of complimentary resources specifically for the Tiny Buddha community, which you can find here.

If you are interested in attending a workshop at their New York campus this summer, here are a few that stood out to me:

And in case you didn’t see my prior email, I wanted to share again some of the programs I suggested last month, including:

That’s a photo from their campus above. If I could participate in an in-person workshop during this time in my life, I would be there in a heartbeat, as I know it’s a true sanctuary and a place for significant connections and profound healing.

If you’ve been feeling as I have lately, I urge you to check out the free resources, and if you choose to attend a workshop, I would love to hear about your experience!

**Sounds That Encourage Mental Calmness**

In today’s fast-paced environment, finding moments of peace can be difficult. Nevertheless, certain sounds have been proven to foster mental calmness and decrease stress. This article examines different kinds of sounds that can help create a serene atmosphere and enhance overall well-being.

### 1. Nature Sounds

Natural sounds, such as birds singing, water flowing, and leaves rustling, have a significant impact on mental calmness. Studies suggest that these sounds can lower blood pressure and ease anxiety. Listening to recordings of rain, ocean waves, or forest ambiance can transport audiences to tranquil settings, encouraging relaxation and mindfulness.

### 2. White Noise

White noise is a steady sound that masks other noises, providing a calming auditory background. It can assist individuals in concentrating, falling asleep, or unwinding by minimizing distractions. Many find white noise machines or apps helpful for creating a peaceful environment, particularly in noisy urban areas.

### 3. Ambient Music

Ambient music, recognized by its calming melodies and absence of a strong rhythm, aims to construct a tranquil soundscape. Artists like Brian Eno have pioneered this genre, which can aid in reducing stress and enhancing focus. Engaging with ambient music during meditation or yoga can deepen the experience and foster a sense of peace.

### 4. Binaural Beats

Binaural beats consist of playing two slightly varying frequencies in each ear, resulting in a perceived third tone. This auditory occurrence can trigger various mental states, including relaxation and tranquility. Research indicates that binaural beats can assist in diminishing anxiety and enhancing mood, making them a favored choice for those pursuing mental clarity.

### 5. Instrumental Sounds

Instrumental music, especially compositions featuring piano, harp, or flute, can evoke feelings of calmness and serenity. The absence of lyrics allows listeners to immerse themselves in the sound, promoting relaxation and minimizing mental clutter. Many individuals find instrumental playlists advantageous for studying, working, or unwinding after a long day.

### 6. ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response)

ASMR is a phenomenon marked by a tingling sensation in reaction to certain auditory triggers like whispering, tapping, or crinkling sounds. Numerous people utilize ASMR videos or audio recordings to promote relaxation and reduce stress. The gentle and personal nature of ASMR can create a soothing atmosphere suitable for sleep and relaxation.

### 7. Guided Meditations

Guided meditations often incorporate calming sounds, such as soft music or nature sounds, alongside a soothing voice leading the listener through relaxation techniques. These recordings assist individuals in unwinding, focusing on their breath, and fostering a sense of inner peace. Many apps and online platforms provide varied guided meditations tailored to diverse needs and preferences.

### Conclusion

Integrating calming sounds into daily life can greatly improve mental well-being. Whether through nature sounds, ambient music, or guided meditations, these auditory experiences can aid in reducing stress, enhancing focus, and promoting relaxation. By consciously creating a sound environment that nurtures calmness, individuals can cultivate a higher sense of peace in their lives.
