Mercedes Hyperscreen Elevates C-Class with Stylish Design Influenced by Dave & Buster's

The newly released electric Mercedes-Benz C-Class debuted this week, showcasing a design that boasts significantly more character than the EV models the brand has previously showcased. While it retains the peculiar melted soap outline, at least the front fascia and taillights capture attention. The cockpit also features aesthetically pleasing details, but most riders will likely overlook them after being captivated by the car’s 39.1-inch display screen.

Our reporter Joel Feder attended the C400 4Matic Electric’s unveiling in person, reporting that the interior “resembles closely that of the electric GLC-Class.” The expansive 39.1-inch Hyperscreen, which stretches across the entire dashboard, is an optional premium feature. If not, you are left with just the “Superscreen” (three distinct screens under one continuous piece of glass showcasing the 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster, 14-inch touchscreen infotainment, and 14-inch passenger display).

I do not intend to offend anyone involved in the creation of these vehicles—I recognize the significant time and effort put into developing the Hyperscreen. However, as a critic, I must assert that this is among the most distasteful car design concepts I could envision.

This overwhelming high-saturation digital display lacks subtlety, sophistication, character, and vibrancy, forcing drivers to peer over it to view the road from the front seats of the car. These qualities cannot be replicated through renderings. In fact, the more bright colors and animations packed into these interfaces, the less these vehicles appear as luxury offerings and more akin to inexpensive toys.

It’s no wonder why Mercedes and every other automaker is heading in this direction. A screen-based interface is significantly cheaper and simpler to produce compared to a tactile setup. A software-defined vehicle is more straightforward to monitor and extract data from than one with mechanical components. Plus, think of all the ongoing revenue potential with updates, apps, and DLCs. Finally, many consumers are indifferent toward cars but enthusiastic about their phones. So, it makes sense that car manufacturers are rushing to make driving experience more akin to scrolling.

The downside for us is that this situation is unfortunate:

The seats, steering wheel, and door handles of the C400 look quite impressive, but they are visually overshadowed by the post-work social hour vibe of the overwhelming Hyperscreen.

I evaluate 40 to 60 new vehicles annually. Many of them include enormous displays, and they all share a common flaw: a significant portion of the screen area invariably displays nothing but illuminated empty space. Judging by the imagery in Mercedes’ press release, this Hyperscreen stands as a prime example. Observe the extensive areas of screensaver being presented here. There might be some utility in a 39.1-inch control panel, but this isn’t it. It’s simply large for the sake of being large.

Screens for passengers are particularly egregious in terms of useless features. Why on Earth would I want to struggle with a car’s limited operating system, wrestling with the seatbelt and the jostling of the road, when I could simply immerse myself in the personal screen (my phone) that is always at hand?

Regardless, I understand we’re drifting into an old-man-yells-at-cloud situation here. Yet, it’s my responsibility to critique, so I will strive to persuade automakers to steer clear of this contest to see who can distract their drivers the most effectively. Automotive user interfaces reached their zenith about ten years ago—three-dimensional gauge displays, phone projection screens roughly twice the size of iPhones. Physical buttons for all vehicle functions. That’s what we need to return to.
