Larry Chen's Impact on Improving Photo Mode in Forza Horizon 6

When Forza Horizon 6 officially launches on May 19 (check out our review in the meantime), you’ll be tasked by automotive photographer Larry Chen. However, Chen is more than just an NPC. He collaborated with the development team to enhance the game’s photo mode and to make sure that Forza Horizon 6 authentically represents Japanese car culture.

“I was able to link up the Forza team with my contacts at Canon because I really wanted to boost the realism of photo mode,” Chen shared with The Drive during a recent discussion. “Canon possesses so much technical expertise regarding optics, photography, and lens functionality that surpasses my own understanding.”

“One recommendation I made was to integrate actual Canon focal lengths that photographers typically use in real life,” Chen stated. “I believed it would assist players in grasping what it genuinely feels like to shoot with authentic cameras and lenses.”

Besides emulating the equipment, Chen wanted the segments of the game he appears in—where he challenges users to complete specific driving tasks to obtain photographs—to mirror the essence of his real-life photography adventures capturing incredible cars throughout Japan. Developers may excel at replicating how a vehicle behaves from behind the wheel, but this focused on mirroring the feelings of urgency and chance that are fundamental to the shutter experience.

“A question that truly excited me was when they inquired if any aspect of my work was time-sensitive,” Chen commented. “My response was essentially that everything is time-sensitive. Especially in Japan, timing is crucial. Be it executing rolling shots, scouting a clear road with minimal traffic, waiting for optimal lighting conditions, or timing a flyby shot perfectly as the Shinkansen passes by, so much of what I do hinges on timing.”

“Many of those real-life situations actually shaped the gameplay and missions,” Chen added. “I was detailing scenarios I encounter regularly while shooting in Japan, and they were genuinely keen on translating that sensation into the gaming experience. What impressed me the most was their dedication to authenticity. They truly wanted this game to feel culturally precise, not merely visually accurate.”

Even at the rollout of the game’s early access, players have already captured remarkable images. Now, you understand the secret behind them:
