British racer Katherine Legge is poised to become the first woman to tackle the renowned “Double.” This Memorial Day Weekend, Legge will start her Sunday in Indianapolis by participating in the Indy 500, followed by a swift flight to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR event.
If she succeeds—and I’m definitely cheering for her—she will cover a cumulative total of 1,100 challenging racing miles. To achieve this, she must complete the 500 without significant delays that could hinder her travel. After the 500, she will need to quickly take a helicopter from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to one of the two neighboring airports, catch a private flight to Charlotte, and then hop on another helicopter to reach the NASCAR location in time for the driver’s briefing and the start of the race.
“Only a handful of drivers ever get the chance to attempt ‘The Double,’ and I don’t cherish that opportunity lightly,” Legge stated at the announcement. “This challenge is about transcending assumed boundaries, believing in yourself, taking risks, and aiming to achieve something extraordinary. Only five drivers have attempted The Double thus far: the late John Andretti in 1994, Robby Gordon in 1997, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, Tony Stewart in 1999 and 2001, Kurt Busch in 2014, and finally, Kyle Larson in 2024 and 2025. Among them, only Tony Stewart has completed all 1,100 miles on the same day. Janet Guthrie announced her plans to undertake The Double in 1976, but did not qualify for the 500.
