The Gran Turismo 7 monthly updates continue with another set of three new vehicles. One is a Porsche 964, another is a variant of the most powerful production car ever, but the key detail here is that the final car in the trio is the original Renault Twingo. And that’s a moment worth celebrating.
I’m not the most plugged-in, online auto enthusiast or blogger, but even I recognize that the Twingo has a certain appeal for the masses—even those who aren’t particularly passionate about cars. This is undoubtedly due to its friend-like shape, arguably making it the most friend-like car ever.
The first-generation Twingo launched in 1993, yet was in production until 2012 in Colombia. In Japan, it was among the first Renault models sold at Nissan dealerships, after the French automaker acquired a stake in Nissan in 1999, leading to a rather complicated and awkward partnership.
The Twingo appearing in The Real Driving Simulator is one of the very early models, featuring an interior upholstery that can only be described as “silly.” Perhaps even “zany.” Twingos have also made their mark in motorsport, with one-make racing series and a team that aimed to enter one in the Nürburgring 24 Hours, although recent unappealing moves from the organizers have derailed that ambition.
In addition to the little Renault is the 964 911 Turbo S Leichtbau. While it’s not the only 964 featured in the game, it is certainly the rarest, after the 911 Carrera RS. Furthermore, there’s the quad-motor Yangwang U9 electric hypercar, which delivers “only” 1,286 horsepower; the U9 Track Edition boosts the power at each corner to 744 hp for a total of 2,977 horses, yet oddly, that isn’t the variant that Polyphony has selected for GT7.
The April 1.69 patch will also introduce a new Muscle Car Extra Menu and Power Pack Challenges—missions for rewards that individuals who bought the Power Pack DLC from late last year can pursue. Anticipate the update to go live overnight.
