Ford Unveils Updated Cobra Jet Mustang as an Electric Car

Speed wins drag races. Naturally, velocity is important too, but the emphasis is on who can cross the finish line first—not who is the fastest. Electric vehicles make complete sense, accordingly. So why does the launch of the new Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 as an EV feel underwhelming?

Perhaps it’s that we’ve experienced it before—more than once. The inaugural electric Mustang Cobra Jet debuted in 2021 sporting 1,400 horsepower, a figure that set an NHRA quarter-mile record at 8.128 seconds and 171.97 mph. Following that was the Mustang Cobra Jet 1800 in 2023, crafted to create new milestones. And now we have the most recent version with 2,200 hp.

Details about this latest vehicle are limited for the moment, as Ford has merely stated it will appear at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals this weekend in Charlotte. My assumption is it’ll make a few runs while there to showcase what EVs can achieve in front of a doubtful audience.

To clarify, I don’t believe many doubt the capabilities of EVs by 2026. It’s simply the stark difference between supercharged V8 engines and this that is… pronounced. While the general public might have considered it impressive once, it’s no longer as captivating or futuristic when your neighbor drives a Tesla or Hyundai that produces the same sound.

Ford

Ford has introduced several EV prototypes that are genuinely exciting. The SuperVan 4.2 that competed at Pikes Peak? Incredible. The 2,250-hp Mach-E featuring active aerodynamics and carbon brakes? Awesome. Yet, we’ve witnessed ample variations of the electric Mustang Cobra Jet to anticipate its arrival. Unless Ford has something wilder than just added power, I’m uncertain it’ll astonish anyone.

The Drive recently conversed with Ford Racing Global Director Mark Rushbrook about this last year, when it became apparent that interest in EVs was declining. He remarked:

“Without a doubt, we are dedicated to offering the preferred powertrains for our customers and the vehicles they desire. We will provide ICE vehicles, hybrid options, and fully electric models, but the ratio of these will evolve over the years. I don’t believe we will transition to all EVs as swiftly as anticipated, but we are progressing towards that.”
