For a site centered around cars, we discuss an impressive amount about lawn mowers. However, if you’re a car enthusiast and not a member of the online lawn care community, how else would you learn about the double-dually Ventrac 4200 XVD put down by the EPA? Or the Ferris IS6200, a massive zero-turn mower equipped with a Caterpillar turbodiesel larger than the engine of a Honda Civic? This blog post focuses on the latter, and what an incredible machine it is.
The engine of the Ferris is a CAT C1.7, a three-cylinder turbodiesel that’s typically seen in wood chippers and trenchers. If you hadn’t figured it out yet, its displacement is 1.7 liters, or 1,700cc. It produces 48 horsepower and up to 122 lb-ft of torque, with an expected lifespan of 4,000 to 5,000 hours. I thought my Hustler with its 18-horsepower Kawasaki was quite something.
This engine is linked to a transmission equipped with dual 21cc hydro gear pumps and 20.6-cubic-inch Parker wheel motors along with an external oil cooler. This powertrain arrangement allows the machine to achieve a top speed of 12 miles per hour forward and 6 mph in reverse. Of course, speed isn’t the only consideration; the 72-inch deck with a hydraulic lift is designed to maximize grass cutting while maneuvering around landscaping features like ponds, stonework, trees, and more.
The Ferris IS6200 includes several additional features that relate to automotive technology. The mower features a digital gauge cluster that shows engine speed, torque, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and battery charge. Even more impressive is the independent suspension with adjustable coilovers. It’s essentially like a track car. (Okay, maybe not exactly.)
It certainly weighs as much as one. According to Ferris’ specifications, the dry weight comes in at 2,518 pounds, and that’s before you top off the 15-gallon fuel tank. All this indicates that the IS6200 is certainly not your grandfather’s riding mower.
Anyone intending to purchase this for personal use or to launch a commercial mowing enterprise will need to part with at least $41,854. The warranty appears quite robust as well, covering all non-engine and non-suspension parts for either two years and unlimited hours or four years and 500 hours—whichever comes first. The suspension is guaranteed for a decade by Ferris, and the engine is covered by CAT for 24 months or 2,000 hours (with unlimited hours for the first 12 months).
I don’t currently have a use for this, but perhaps one day when I transition into my Lawn Dad phase. Though, I’ll have to hit the jackpot first.

**CAT Diesel-Powered Mower Boasts Engine Size Surpassing That of a Honda Civic**
In the domain of landscaping and robust mowing machinery, CAT (Caterpillar Inc.) has established a prominent reputation with its groundbreaking diesel-powered mowers. Among their outstanding characteristics is the remarkable engine capacity, which can surpass that of a Honda Civic. This article explores the features and benefits of CAT’s diesel-powered mowers, emphasizing their powerful engines and the advantages they offer to professional landscapers and large property owners.
### Engine Characteristics
CAT’s diesel-powered mowers come equipped with engines that feature a displacement considerably larger than that of a conventional Honda Civic, which typically has a 1.5 to 2.0-liter engine. CAT mowers frequently contain engines ranging from 2.5 liters to over 3.0 liters, offering not just superior power but also improved torque. This increased engine size results in enhanced efficiency and performance, enabling the mower to navigate challenging terrains and thick grass effortlessly.
### Power and Efficiency
The powerful engine in CAT diesel-powered mowers provides outstanding horsepower, allowing users to efficiently mow extensive areas swiftly. The high torque output enhances handling in demanding conditions, like steep inclines or uneven surfaces. This capability is especially advantageous for commercial landscapers who need reliable machinery that can operate effectively under tough circumstances.
### Fuel Efficiency
A significant advantage of diesel engines is their superior fuel efficiency. CAT mowers are engineered to optimize fuel consumption, permitting operators to cover greater distances while using less fuel compared to gasoline-powered options. This not only cuts operating expenses but also lessens environmental impact, making CAT mowers a more eco-friendly option for landscaping professionals.
### Durability and Lifespan
Caterpillar is well-known for its dedication to durability and dependability. The design of CAT diesel-powered mowers exemplifies this principle, incorporating heavy-duty components built to endure intense usage. The larger engine contributes to the mower’s overall longevity, as it runs at lower RPMs than smaller engines, leading to decreased wear over time.
### Cutting-Edge Technology
CAT integrates advanced technology into its diesel-powered mowers to enhance user experience and operational productivity. Features like electronic fuel injection, sophisticated cooling systems, and built-in diagnostics provide operators with real-time data about the mower’s functionality. This technology improves efficiency and simplifies maintenance, keeping the mower in peak condition.
### Comfort and Ergonomics
Recognizing the demands placed on operators, CAT designs its mowers with operator comfort and ergonomics in focus. Features such as adjustable seating, user-friendly controls, and vibration-damping systems ensure that operators can work for extended periods without discomfort. This attention to user comfort boosts both productivity and job satisfaction.
### Conclusion
CAT’s diesel-powered mowers, boasting engines larger than those found in a Honda Civic, signify a notable advancement in landscaping tools. With their powerful performance, fuel efficiency, durability, and advanced technology, these mowers are ideally suited for both commercial and residential uses. As the demand for effective and reliable mowing solutions continues to rise, CAT remains at the cutting edge of innovation in the market, delivering equipment that fulfills the requirements of modern landscapers.
