However, discovering displays that fit perfectly and can be installed behind a standard BMW instrument cluster of the era with minimal additional parts is crucial to Jean’s vision for the project, which is designed to be both plug-and-play and simple to install or remove, should a customer wish to transfer their digital cluster to another vehicle later.
“I’m trying to consider every variable I can identify regarding the differences in years, wiring variations, and the essentials versus non-essentials,” Jean explained, mentioning that his current priority is refining the user interface.
“I don’t want it to lag, as that detracts from the digital experience,” Jean expressed. “I was watching a video of, I believe it’s a MoTeC unit, in a Gunther Werks Porsche. I noted that the needle appeared a bit sluggish, and I was taken aback that, you know, that’s the level of acceptance at that price point for certain products, but clearly, you’re not purchasing the car solely for that. When you own such an extreme vehicle, you’re not acquiring it for the cluster, but customers will choose my cluster specifically for the cluster, correct? Therefore, I can’t allow that.”
Jean is aiming for a price of $1,300 for an entire unit. It will feature a control knob, “because nobody wants to reach behind a steering wheel to fiddle with a touchscreen,” as he points out, along with wireless connectivity to facilitate over-the-air updates, likely from a paired smartphone with a companion application. He is also open to phone projection options, via Apple’s new CarPlay Ultra system designed for circular displays, although it’s not currently included in the project’s scope.
A Pro version with integrated navigation is being contemplated, however. This is where a digital replacement cluster could truly excel—not only in mimicking the appearance of the original gauges but also allowing drivers to swiftly scroll through various types of information while maintaining the original aesthetic.
There’s a lot to tackle, especially since it’s just Jean working on this with his cousin, all entirely self-funded for the time being. He has thought about crowdfunding, but would only consider that path once he establishes credibility with the initial product launch. “Realistically, I don’t want to betray anyone’s trust,” he remarked.
