I drove the 2026 Hummer EV 3X Pickup Truck extensively over the summer. We ventured to cabin country, tackled off-road trails, and most importantly, transported Bramble the dog and her brother Silas around the Hudson Valley. This is the Hummer EV Pickup dog evaluation.

The Drive has assessed numerous vehicles for canine-friendliness. In the end, we’ve discovered that almost any dog can fit (nearly) in any vehicle if you try enough. What defines a good dog taxi boils down to how easy it is to get in and out and the space in the back seat. But only our careful testing can address every significant question about car and dog compatibility.
Test 1: Do Dogs Look Stylish In This Vehicle?
Definitely.
The Hummer EV presents a unique coolness contradiction. Its main purpose is to look trendy, which makes it somewhat pretentious, hence inherently uncool. However, it is undeniably technologically remarkable, once again suggesting a sense of coolness. Wherever you go in a Hummer, people will spot your vehicle, form an opinion about it, and think, “yep, that’s the person with the Hummer.”
Yet—dogs are excellent at disarming constructed coolness. Even those who dislike Hummers will likely smile when they see you sharing your ride with dogs.
Test 2: Can Dogs Jump In and Out?
Yes, but only if they are particularly agile breeds (Australian shepherds, border collies, etc.).
Bramble, weighing 47 pounds, can leap from the ground into a closed Tacoma bed if tempted by something as enticing as a raw hot dog. She managed to get into the back seat without much hassle. Silas, at nearly 70 pounds, needed a bit of assistance. An older dog would require a ramp. And a small dog would need to be lifted inside.
Even with the Hummer set to its lowest air-suspension setting, the seat base is significantly high off the ground.
Test 3: Is There Ample Space for Dogs to Ride?
Yes, in plenty.
The Hummer EV is incredibly wide; although there are only three seatbelts, it could theoretically seat five medium-sized individuals side by side on the back bench without causing discomfort. Between the bench and the footwell area, you could likely accommodate six fairly large dogs in the back seat.
Regarding the pickup bed, another 10 dogs could potentially fit in there. But that’s not advisable—dogs shouldn’t be riding in truck beds except for on-property farm driving. The wind can behave unpredictably, especially at highway speeds, and with the high noise levels, hard surfaces, and lack of securing options, your pet isn’t safe in a truck bed beyond a driveway speed.
Test 4: Is the Cabin Resistant To Paws and Claws?
Absolutely.
I typically use seat covers for vehicle testing with dogs, but I’ve been around enough car interiors to recognize what scratches easily and what does not. The Hummer EV’s interior consists entirely of durable materials; it’s chunky without delicate details or fine surfaces that a pet might scratch.
Consequently, cleaning dog hair wouldn’t be too challenging in this vehicle since much of the interior is leather (doesn’t cling to hair) or rubberized hard material (doesn’t hold onto anything). In fact, you won’t need to vacuum frequently if you remove the roofs, which leads us to the following section …
Test 5: Are There Any Unique Dog-Friendly Features?
The Hummer EV comes with four removable roof panels known as Infinity Roof Sky Panels. This is akin to a Jeep’s Freedom Top or traditional T-top … involving two rows. As you may observe, whether or not you own a dog, these creatures tend to adore sticking their noses out of car windows and receiving airflow. Therefore, in a way, having the roof removed offers the ultimate scent experience.
However, I sensed that Bramble had a sort of love/hate relationship with the Hummer’s open roof. She appeared to love it at lower speeds, but as we approached or surpassed 50 mph, her expression shifted to discomfort, and she began to hide behind the front seats. It seemed to be a case of “too much of a good thing.” Indeed, the experience transitions swiftly from a gentle breeze to a Navy storm-readiness test as speed increases.
Bramble seemed unfazed by the Hummer’s maneuverability features (CrabWalk and King Crab rear-steering maneuvers) but certainly wouldn’t have welcomed the raw power of a 1,160-horsepower WTF Mode launch.
Conclusion
While the new Hummer truck is capable of startling acceleration and remarkably impressive handling, Bramble and I found the most enjoyment with all the windows open, cruising at about 35 mph. With a gentle breeze flowing through the cabin and the evening sun reflecting off the armored decorative elements, it feels like being Master Chief on a getaway.
If your dog is agile enough to jump into this towering fortress of a vehicle, you will both thoroughly enjoy exploring and savoring the scents the world provides. And, rest assured, you won’t smell any exhaust fumes at all due to the fully electric powertrain!
