Rivian's CEO Emphasizes Major Market Opportunities for Small Electric Pickup Trucks

Pickup trucks are enormous. Many of them won’t even fit in today’s modern garages. This is particularly true for electric trucks. Though the Rivian R1T is smaller than most full-size trucks, both gas and electric, it’s still not considered small.

In Park City, Utah, during a private one-on-one conversation on The Drivecast, Rivian Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe hardly allowed me to complete my query regarding the existence of a market, a viable market, for a smaller electric pickup than the R1. “Yeah,” the CEO replied decisively.

“Oh, I believe there’s a, I mean, you’ve heard me discuss this previously. I think within the realm of electrified products, there are numerous segments that still remain unaddressed. The primary segment that truly hasn’t been addressed is the genuine midsize SUV; we currently lack a great midsize SUV that consumers can buy. There are midsize crossovers, but not real SUVs. In the realm of smaller trucks, I see a significant opportunity; the concept of adventure-oriented crossovers presents a big chance, thus R3. There’s also R4. We must also acknowledge that on the platform, there are further developments beyond R2 and R3 that we must consider in terms of what’s the next array of products we pursue,” Scaringe mentioned.

Previously, Scaringe indicated, “We’ve considered R2Ts and even subsequent concepts. I would just state the platform is capable of a lot. The primary challenge we face is determining what to pursue. There are countless exciting possibilities we can create. Thus, as a company, we need to concentrate on what’s the next product or product line we bring forth that creates the highest value, generating the most enthusiasm for the company. This has influenced the portfolio we’ve publicly discussed, including R2 and R3. I feel that R3X was well-intended, it was supposed to be, and perhaps was received less, but it was meant to signal the type of developments that could occur. To indicate that off the R2 platform there could—or off the R3 platform, there exists—a unique variant, and off the R2 platform, unique variants could emerge. There are numerous avenues to explore. Therefore, in the fullness of time, I don’t dismiss anything. However, in the near term, I wouldn’t anticipate any of those significantly different variants. It will remain R2.”

Whether R4 will take the form of a pickup or something absolutely different remains uncertain. Scaringe would only disclose, “it’s very exciting, but we’re not ready to discuss it yet.” When pressed on whether it could be a pickup, Scaringe merely replied, “It could encompass a lot of possibilities.”

Anything our imagination can conjure, for the time being. However, Scaringe didn’t rule out the possibility of a compact electric pickup truck eventually arriving.
