Last November, Genesis made a significant impression by unveiling its Magma GT Concept, a striking coupe that resembles a supercar. At that time, Genesis’s Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke informed The Drive that this model could have as many variants as a Porsche 911. Today, the South Korean manufacturer is fulfilling that promise with the introduction of its more thrilling, race-oriented version: the Genesis Magma GT3 Concept.
Unveiled today at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where Genesis will compete in the Hypercar class for the first time, the Magma GT3 Concept illustrates a “possible future direction” as it looks to explore additional racing prospects beyond WEC’s premier category.
The GT3 was created in partnership with Hyundai Motorsport, and although it still carries the “concept” label, it appears ready for the racetrack. During the launch, Head of Hyundai Motorsport Cyril Abiteboul stated that the GT3 would complete the Genesis racing framework and act as a business opportunity as a customer vehicle available for teams and drivers.
This is logical, as the automaker’s strong initiative to grow within Europe and elevate South Korea into the global motorsport arena will necessitate substantial marketing and resources. Presenting a vehicle to contest in a class beyond Hypercar would significantly aid this.
“The Magma GT Concept and Magma GT3 Concept symbolize two unique yet interrelated representations of Genesis performance,” remarked Donckerwolke. “The Magma GT Concept encapsulates our vision of luxury and athleticism for the road, while the Magma GT3 Concept transforms that philosophy into the racing arena, where every aspect is driven by performance, efficiency, and purpose. Collectively, they showcase how Genesis is investigating the comprehensive range of high performance—from refined grand touring to uncompromising motorsport.”
Similar to the standard GT, the GT3 Concept is breathtaking up close. The headlights integrated into the center of the bumper look impressive, while the DRL light signatures at the corners provide it with that distinct Genesis flair. The fierce front and rear diffusers, large rear wing, and the sleek roofline differentiate it from any other vehicle on the market. When this car hits the racetrack, it will undoubtedly have a commanding presence even among competitors like Ferraris, Porsches, and other European brands.
Abiteboul also elaborated on how the GT3 Concept serves as an exploration of the technical regulations within the category, which acted as the project’s guiding principle. Instead of beginning with a road-ready production model and subsequently modifying it for racing, the approach has been reversed. He referred to it as a “performance-first design philosophy.” Naturally, a street version will need to be available for the public to comply with either WEC’s or IMSA’s GT-class regulations, so this ideal primarily concerns the vehicle’s conceptualization rather than its actual production and development.
At the end of the presentation, Donckerwolke pointed to Manfred Harrer, President and Head of Hyundai Motor Group’s R&D division, and stated, “Manfred indicated it will go into production.”
The Genesis Magma Racing team, in its inaugural WEC season this year, scored points in just its second race and qualified in commendable sixth and ninth placements for the upcoming 24-hour race on Saturday.
