When Toyota unveiled its successor to the 200 Series Land Cruiser in 2021, the rest of the globe received the 300 Series, while the U.S. got a rebranded variant of the smaller Land Cruiser Prado (albeit after a significant delay). Just as we began to acclimatize to this, Toyota introduced a more potent version of the global 300 Series. However, this may not be as upsetting as it appears.
A new hybrid powertrain is set to debut in the GR Sport and Sahara ZX versions in Australia and other regions later this year. It features a twin-turbocharged, 3.5-liter V6 paired with a single electric motor and a 10-speed automatic transmission, akin to the gasoline hybrid powertrain found in the U.S.-market Tundra, Sequoia, and the 300 Series’ Lexus LX counterpart. It generates 457 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque.
As noted by Toyota in a press release for the Australian market, this powertrain delivers 152 hp and 66 lb-ft more than the currently available twin-turbo, 3.3-liter diesel V6. It also surpasses the non-hybrid, twin-turbo, 3.5-liter V6 option of the 300 Series by 48 hp and 103 lb-ft. However, this output matches the U.S.-market Lexus LX 700h, which essentially mirrors the 300 Series in a more luxurious form.
The more robust hybrid system coupled with a simpler Land Cruiser configuration seems like a remarkable pairing, yet the price variation isn’t overly substantial. In Australia, the GR Sport and Sahara ZX hybrids begin at around $111,700 and $112,237, respectively. In the U.S., the 2027 Lexus LX 700h Overtrail—the most affordable variant with the hybrid powertrain—starts at $116,785 including destination fees. This model comes standard with front and rear locking differentials, 33-inch all-terrain tires, and a front skid plate.
The Australian-market GR Sport also includes front and rear lockers, along with Toyota’s E-KDSS. The Sahara ZX is equipped with just a Torsen limited-slip rear differential. Both models feature adaptive dampers and Multi-Terrain Select drive modes, in addition to “leather-accented” upholstery and heated and ventilated front and outboard rear seating.
It’s still disappointing that we lack the 300 Series Land Cruiser, but this explains why. The larger Land Cruiser does not provide the LX with enough market separation, unlike the current U.S.-market Land Cruiser does. This was evident during the era of the 200 Series, and judging by Toyota’s pricing strategy for the new 300 Series hybrid, it remains true.
