As the No. 93 Acura ARX-06 piloted by Renger van der Zande and Nick Yelloly crossed the finish line in first place during last Saturday’s Acura Long Beach Grand Prix, speculation about the automaker withdrawing from IMSA intensified over the weekend. Those speculations are now validated.
Acura announced on Wednesday afternoon that it will be “pausing” its IMSA GTP program following the current season. No explanation was provided regarding the reasons for this decision or when it anticipates resuming the program—if at all.
“We are incredibly proud of our achievements during this era of Acura prototype racing that commenced back in 2018 with the introduction of the Acura ARX-05 and we are dedicated to competing for the championship in IMSA’s GTP category through 2026 with the hybrid Acura ARX-06,” stated David Salters, President of Honda Racing Corporation USA.
“We’ve achieved 25 victories, 34 poles, and 10 championships during this period and look forward to a strong finish in 2026. I want to commend all the skilled individuals at HRC US, Acura, Meyer Shank Racing, and Oreca who have diligently worked to bring us to our current standing in this highly competitive GTP field,” Salters added.
Nevertheless, it did announce that Acura will sponsor Meyer Shank Racing Honda-powered Indy cars throughout the 2026 season—as it did in Long Beach with Felix Rosenqvist—including Marcus Armstrong’s #66 at the 110th Indianapolis 500 next month. The statement did not provide specifics for 2027, although it did mention exploring “other high-profile opportunities in IndyCar during the 2026 season and beyond.”
While Indy cars are exciting, and as competitive as IndyCar is, placing some logos on a car hardly makes up for fans who cherish seeing a factory-level effort in IMSA’s GTP class. Although it’s likely that the current hardware we see on the track will still be present with customer teams, it’s still disappointing on many fronts.
Although unconfirmed, chatter suggests that Porsche’s IMSA GTP initiative with Penske will also conclude at the end of the year, similar to what it has announced in WEC.
