Nissan Xterra Crafted for 35-Inch Tires, Able to Fit 37-Inch Tires with Aftermarket Adjustments

What a phenomenal week for fans of the Nissan Xterra. Devoted brand supporters appear to be in for a treat with the legendary nameplate’s revival set for 2028.

On Wednesday in Yokohama, Japan, Chairman of Nissan Americas Christian Meunier proudly declared that the forthcoming Xterra will come equipped from the factory to handle up to 35-inch tires, and “possibly 37 or larger in aftermarket.”

Following Meunier’s remarks about tire sizes, Nissan North America Senior Vice President and Chief Planning Officer Ponz Pandikuthira stated, “The vehicle will serve as a platform, correct? It will be designed to make it simple for the aftermarket to implement enhancements such as lift kits and larger wheels and tires, fender flares, and more.”

Meunier added, “We will engage actively with the aftermarket to ensure the vehicle can be personalized for modifications that we usually cannot execute from the factory. I hope to present it at SEMA next year, ideally, to begin sparking some excitement and interest among aftermarket communities.”

Earlier in the day, Meunier hinted at the Xterra with a second image this week, accompanied by a straightforward quote stating “Badass is back.”

On Monday, we caught our first glimpse of the front of the Xterra, which definitely appears robust, boxy, and contemporary.

Nissan has already announced that the Xterra will be a body-on-frame SUV offering a V6 and a hybrid V6 engine option. There’s no sign of a turbo-four engine. A four-wheel-drive system equipped with a 2-speed transfer case is highly likely.

In November, The Drive exclusively revealed that the Xterra would remain priced below $40,000 at its 2028 launch. Meunier confirmed this price point again on Wednesday, stating, “I’m going to deliver an Xterra with everything necessary, nothing extraneous, which is the slogan from 2002 that we believe aligns with the brand’s ethos.”

Nissan is currently undergoing a restructuring plan intended to streamline its lineup, reduce expenses, and retain the valuable elements. The newly appointed CEO Ivan Espinosa told The Drive in February to assure enthusiasts that “Nissan is back.” Thus far, the outlook appears favorable for fans and loyalists of the brand.

Only time will reveal the outcome.

### Nissan Xterra: Designed for 35-Inch Tires from the Factory, Capable of Housing 37-Inch Tires with Aftermarket Enhancements

The Nissan Xterra, a robust SUV celebrated for its off-road functionalities, has cultivated a devoted following among adventure lovers and off-road enthusiasts. A key feature of the Xterra is its tire compatibility, which is vital for its performance and adaptability. The factory specifications support 35-inch tires, while aftermarket enhancements permit fitting 37-inch tires, boosting its off-road capabilities.

#### Factory Specifications

The Nissan Xterra was designed with a strong emphasis on resilience and off-road functionality. The factory specifications facilitate the fitting of 35-inch tires without requiring major alterations to the vehicle’s suspension or body. This configuration guarantees that the Xterra retains its handling traits, stability, and ride comfort while offering sufficient ground clearance for overcoming rough landscapes.

The original suspension system, coupled with the sturdy frame and ample ground clearance, enables the Xterra to effectively tackle obstacles like rocks, mud, and steep gradients. The 35-inch tires present a balanced solution for off-road driving, delivering a combination of traction, comfort, and control.

#### Aftermarket Enhancements for 37-Inch Tires

For enthusiasts looking to elevate the Xterra’s off-road performance, aftermarket adaptations can allow for the fitting of 37-inch tires. These enhancements typically encompass:

1. **Suspension Lift Kits**: A lift kit is often essential to accommodate 37-inch tires. These kits elevate the vehicle’s body, creating extra space for larger tires and enhancing overall off-road capability. A lift of 2 to 3 inches is generally advised.

2. **Wheel Well Adjustments**: Depending on the particular tire and wheel pairing, some minor trimming of the wheel wells may be necessary to avoid rubbing during turns or when the suspension compresses.

3. **Re-gearing Differentials**: Larger tires can impact the vehicle’s gearing, leading to reduced acceleration and power. Re-gearing the differentials can help restore optimal performance levels and enhance fuel efficiency.

4. **Upgraded Brake Systems**: Enhancing the brake system may be needed to accommodate the added weight and size of larger tires, ensuring reliable stopping power.

5. **Alignment Adjustments**: Following the installation of larger tires and suspension modifications, a professional alignment is crucial to guarantee proper handling and tire longevity.

#### Advantages of Upgrading to 37-Inch Tires

Transitioning to 37-inch tires can greatly boost the Xterra’s off-road performance. The increased tire size offers:

– **Enhanced Traction**: Greater surface area and deeper tread patterns improve grip on diverse terrains, including mud, sand, and rocky ground.

– **Heightened Ground Clearance**: Larger tires lift the vehicle higher from the ground, minimizing the risk of undercarriage damage and improving approach and departure angles.

– **Improved Aesthetics**: Many enthusiasts favor the aggressive appearance that larger tires confer, granting the Xterra a more intimidating presence on and off the road.

#### Considerations

While upgrading to 37-inch tires can bolster performance, it’s vital to consider the potential downsides. Larger tires may increase road noise, reduce fuel efficiency, and impact ride comfort. Additionally, the expenses of aftermarket enhancements can accumulate, so it’s essential for owners to evaluate the advantages against their budget and intended vehicle usage.

#### Conclusion

The Nissan Xterra stands as a versatile SUV that, with its factory design supporting 35-inch tires, provides a robust platform for off-road escapades. For those aspiring to push boundaries further, aftermarket modifications can facilitate the fitting of 37-inch tires, unleashing even greater possibilities for tackling demanding terrains. Whether adhering to factory specifications or pursuing upgrades, the Xterra remains a dependable option for off-road enthusiasts.
