Their conversation revolved around VW’s U.S. crossover lineup, with Keogh articulating that the firm would benefit from enhancing its performance selections beyond its typical hot-hatch/sport-sedan categories. Naturally, Joel was curious about what that would entail.
This occurred prior to 2020, and during that period, VW was not prepared to reveal anything. But now? This Tiguan R certainly speaks for itself. Yet, if you were to inquire with anyone at Volkswagen of America regarding this crossover, they would insist it’s nonexistent.
Could this be a situation of advancing yet retreating? Possibly. The Tiguan R is unmistakably beyond just a prototype stage. There isn’t even a hint of camouflage on any part of the vehicle. If it weren’t for absent center caps and the hastily placed documentation in the windows, you wouldn’t realize validation engineers were testing these prototypes.
Furthermore, not only does it not resemble a prototype, but it also appears… dare I say it… rather good. I’m no VW enthusiast to any degree, but the Tiguan’s proportions seem fantastic with a subtle drop and larger wheels. The quad exhausts could be excessive on a smaller SUV, to be fair, but the whole design effectively conveys a legitimate hot-hatch vibe.
Keogh mentioned back then, “Golf R is a cherished model and we believe we can recreate that enthusiasm in different segments.” Given the significant platform sharing among VW’s various models, creating performance variants like this Tiguan is relatively straightforward. Clearly, VW’s compact SUV would be substantially more exhilarating with some R-style flair (not to mention enhanced capability).
So if engineering isn’t hindering VW, what is? The last update we received cited “cost” as the issue—and that was prior to COVID and the considerable price surges we’ve encountered since. Nevertheless, VW has previously responded to its fanbase. That’s how we ended up with the R32, after all.
