“That took us all by surprise,” Walker remarked in response to a question about the announcement during a HotCars interview. “Being on stage with him when he makes the announcement, I’m thinking, ‘Oh really? Now I have to answer a million questions without any answers.’”
“Vin says, ‘You know, Universal hasn’t greenlit the project yet. They will agree to it, but it hasn’t been approved yet,’” Walker shared. “I replied, ‘Yeah, I’m aware.’ He added, ‘I’m going to go on stage and make the announcement, and you’ll see what follows.’ So he went on stage, made the declaration, and Universal had no clue that the movie was even in the pipeline. Now they know and it’s approved.”
Bold move, but one would expect nothing less from Vin Diesel. Fast X premiered in 2023, and the release of the concluding chapter in the saga has taken longer than fans—and, we’d wager, Dom himself—would have preferred. Did he make an early announcement just to jumpstart negotiations? To place Universal in a position where they couldn’t refuse? Who knows. One might think that, as a producer and principal actor, he wouldn’t have made the daring move if he lacked complete confidence in the outcome. Perhaps the “green light” was merely a formality at that point.
