The Porsche Cayenne Electric: An Enjoyable but Unexpected Off-Road Adventure

When people envision driving a Porsche, off-roading is the last thing that comes to mind. This is especially the case with the 2026 Cayenne Electric. Owners wouldn’t want to damage their expensive SUV on rugged trails, and furthermore, EV off-roading is quite a specialized venture as it stands. Yet, just because people choose not to do it doesn’t imply the car lacks capability. On the contrary, as I discovered.

I recently had the chance to drive the much-anticipated Cayenne Electric, and you can check out that review here. I spent considerable time behind the wheel of both the 435-hp base model and the astonishing 1,139-hp Turbo, piloting each through a challenging off-road circuit. (I also experienced a ride-along with two-time Le Mans champion Timo Bernhard on a thrilling rallycross stage.)

Off-Road Course

Check out the images here, and you’ll observe that I pushed the Cayenne Electric to its limits off-road—something few will attempt, but that hasn’t deterred Porsche from crafting their vehicles to meet top-notch standards. The course was a loop featuring muddy paths, steep grades, and several deeply rutted areas where steering didn’t play much of a role.

With Off-Road mode turned on, the Cayenne Electric elevated its suspension and modified the all-wheel-drive and traction-control configurations to tackle challenging traction issues and potential wheel slippage. It also activated the surround-view cameras, which were beneficial during climbs—whether ascending or descending—and sharp turns.

“Few people will do this in the real world, but it’s important to understand its potential, just in case you take an unexpected turn,” my Porsche off-road guide remarked from the passenger seat.

That’s true. If I were to purchase one of these—regardless of whether it was a base or a Turbo—I wouldn’t intentionally put it through such scenarios. Both are six-figure SUVs, and unless you’re getting something like a Defender Octa, you don’t buy one of those to dangle a wheel or two in the air. Yet, I did just that because Porsche encouraged me to.

After navigating through WRC-worthy mountain roads, it was the Cayenne Electric’s turn to smoothly descend the first of many steep, muddy inclines.

I could feel the axle engage regenerative braking to slow down and maintain control, which is impressive considering the EV approaches nearly 6,000 pounds. Each tire was able to independently apply the mechanical brakes to ensure a safe descent. Even on terrain so slippery that the ruts dictated the vehicle’s direction more than the steering wheel, traction control managed the power distribution to keep me headed the right way.

With 9.6 inches of ground clearance in its highest suspension setting, the Cayenne Electric can traverse most obstacles found on mild trails. In my experience, as these images illustrate, this was more than sufficient to navigate rocks and ruts in my path. On inclines, it felt extremely stable, despite rolling on all-season street tires that were clearly more performance-oriented than suited for off-road conditions.

Rallycross

Who could foresee that a broad, tall, and hefty electric SUV could zip through a rallycross course effortlessly—on street tires? No one. But the pairing of the Cayenne Turbo Electric with Timo Bernhard is far from ordinary, leading to some exhilarating moments.

Like many action scenarios, the video below fails to capture the full experience. You simply can’t gauge how rapidly I was thrust backward when he accelerated, how intense the braking was, how fierce the acceleration felt exiting corners, and most importantly, how thrilling it was to slide sideways through entire corners as Bernhard navigated various course sections.

Off-roading the 2026 Porsche Cayenne Electric with Timo Bernhard

I can’t articulate it well, so just watch the video. Enjoy
