The Goodwood Revival: Honoring the Spirit of Automotive Culture

“A Time Machine for the Finest Racing in the World,” “Goodwood Revival: A Gathering of Exceptional Historic Cars for Competition,” “Why Numerous Automotive Journalists Consider the Goodwood Revival Their Top Event,” and “The Ideal Time Machine,” among others, penned by my peers following their experience at the event.

England: The Heart of Car Culture

Controversial opinion, but is it true? Sure, there are Germany, Japan, and the United States, all boasting their own car cultures. Yet, I can’t shake the feeling that no other nation cherishes the heritage of the automobile like England does. Be it Jaguar, Land Rover, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, or any aristocratic manufacturers, they honor their origins and their historical significance. Germany and the U.S. have their merits too, but there’s a reason the prime car culture event on the globe takes place in England—and don’t get me started on the motorsport aspect, featuring Brooklands, Silverstone, Formula 1, and other events and figures that established the old kingdom as the center of automotive culture ages ago.

This isn’t meant to undermine other nations, locations, brands, or events that portray the broader picture of the automotive community we adore. It’s about the stronger association between vehicles, racing, and world history there. You won’t find another place on Earth where a dozen Le Mans-raced Ford GT40s, 30 Ferrari 250 GTOs, and 10 Jaguar D-Types are parked alongside a row of P-51 Mustangs and Spitfires that played roles in WWII, solely at the Revival.

Embracing the Culture

I attend Monterey Car Week almost every year, and each time, a newcomer to Quail, Reunion, or Pebble Beach gets offended when I say, “Oh, this is great but…” It’s as if I just dissed their family. The reality is, those three events are fantastic, and every car enthusiast should experience them at least once. However, there’s a crucial distinction between Monterey and what unfolds in Chichester: people recognize it’s not just about the vehicles.

The Goodwood Revival is a motoring event, yes, but more than anything, it’s a cultural celebration. It honors peak Britannia; it pays tribute to an era when many residents of the island felt they were on the verge of a Nazi invasion. It transports attendees of all ages and backgrounds back to a time when community mattered, enduring together through hardships: bombings, rationing, loved ones drafted to war.

When WWII concluded and life gradually returned to normal—if one can even define it as such—vehicles and racing were pivotal in shifting minds away from the dreadful past and toward hope. New models, new car businesses, and novel technologies emerged, and people raced anything they could find. That’s what the Revival embodies: a celebration of life, with cars playing a significant role.

Then there’s the fashion, which, aside from the cars, is my personal favorite part of the occasion. Even at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, attendees sport jeans and sweatpants—and hey, to each their own, but certain occasions call for a specific decorum. At the Revival, guests go all out with attire from the era, appearing as if they stepped out of the ’20s to the ’40s. It’s breathtaking. From mechanics to racers to go-go dancers to military reenactments, the fashion animates the event in an unmatched way. You could gather every car in the world, but without the style, it simply wouldn’t have the same essence. It’s enchanting.

Experience It Yourself

I’ve been to the Goodwood Revival multiple times, both as a guest of Subaru and at my own expense. In fact, one year I planned a trip with friends to celebrate my son’s 16th birthday and my dad’s 70th; it was memorable. I can’t envision spending that level of time or resources on any other auto event worldwide. That’s how deeply I cherish this place.

If you’re interested in going but have inquiries about the venue, travel, accommodations, logistics, or budgeting, feel free to reach out. I’d be delighted to assist. The goal is to get out there, appreciate this and other wonderful events, and as car aficionados, support one another in making those aspirations a reality.

Until then, I trust you enjoyed these images captured by the talented Amy Shore, with the courtesy of Subaru.
