A software company specializing in auto dealerships is promoting AI-driven kiosks intended to take over from car salespeople on the showroom floor. Automotive News reports that the industry has its doubts. But honestly—would you actually prefer working with a typical car lot salesperson over a computer?
Epikar, a South Korean firm that develops digital management solutions for automotive dealerships, has introduced its latest AI creation, the Pikar Genie. The concept is that customers can interact with this device, pose product inquiries, and essentially do everything you would with a car salesman, except for finalizing the sale and signing the documents.
So it’s not entirely like ordering nuggets from those massive-screen ATMs at McDonald’s, but somewhat similar.
Renault, BMW, and Volvo have already incorporated some Epikar solutions in their South Korean dealerships, although this new customer-centric AI offering is still just starting out. AN noted that “Renault has three sales staff assigned to its Seoul showroom outfitted with Epikar automation compared to six in other Renault showrooms in South Korea,” as stated by Epikar’s CEO Bosuk Han.
The company is currently aiming to expand into the U.S. and reportedly is already trialing its products in at least one American dealership.
Car-dealer consultant Fleming Ford (Director of Strategic Growth at NCM Associates) mentioned to AN that U.S. dealerships “are not prepared for fully automated showrooms.”
“The showroom is not only a place to purchase a vehicle,” Automotive News quoted him as saying. “It’s where you decide who you can trust to assist you in selecting the right vehicle.”
I’ll admit, I’ve only stepped inside automobile dealerships as a buyer fewer than a dozen times. But, I’m sorry to say, “trustworthy” has never been the impression I’ve gathered from a commission-driven salesperson.
In fact, every interaction I’ve had with a working salesman felt much more akin to engaging with a chatbot rather than a real individual.
Now, I’m not looking to disparage individuals in the car sales industry. I understand, you’re just trying to meet your targets and head home like everyone. However, in my view, active car salespeople tend to follow scripts more than hold genuine conversations, aiming to move whatever vehicle has been on the lot the longest into your garage.
For instance, I assisted my grandfather in acquiring a new Nissan Frontier recently. He’s been driving pickups since the 1960s and specifically wanted a basic, short-cab Frontier as probably his final truck.
I accompanied him to a Nissan dealership, where I conveyed his preference. The salesman cheerfully acknowledged and typed out what seemed like an entire movie script on his computer, then printed a specification list and offered me a deal … for a high-end, four-door PRO-4X. We left the store.
Days later, we managed to secure the truck he desired from another dealership—I had to literally recite the inventory stock number from the store’s website to motivate the sales guy to go fetch the keys.
So, I wouldn’t label myself an “admirer” of AI, but this isn’t a job loss I’ll feel particularly upset about. That being said, who knows if Epikar will truly be the game-changer here—I can’t seem to get its website to function in any browsers at this moment (not an ideal sign for a tech firm).
Car dealers are known for resisting change, and it may take considerable time to automate car sales given the paperwork involved in vehicle ownership (loans, insurance, titles, registration). However, once the technology is established, dealership owners will likely be eager for robot sales representatives. A salesperson that never takes a smoke break, can access the entire internet in an instant, and most importantly, never takes a commission? Those qualities will surely appeal to managers, regardless of consumer opinions.
