“We discovered [the speaker] during disassembly when the BMW service manual mentioned removing the acoustic generator,” Elam informed me. Indeed, the manual refers to this component as both an “acoustic sensor” and “sound generator,” indicating that even BMW—the brand that introduced the world’s first “Sports Activity Vehicle”—is straightforward about what this part actually does.

I inquired if he considered transforming this device into a completely impractical portable speaker, perhaps for a gathering. It has the capacity for it; a recent Hagerty video recorded the output of this component at an impressive 110 dB. That’s supposedly as loud as a concert.
“We actually used it as the speaker in our workshop for a day or so, and it is indeed quite loud,” he mentioned, emphasizing that it’s tuned for bass above all. This makes sense for a speaker specifically designed to project engine sounds.
This i8 might not require the speaker’s assistance, given Elam’s plans for it: a B58 inline-six with a Dynamic Autowerx turbo fitted at the front, aiming for around 700 horsepower at the wheels. He believes hitting that target won’t pose a challenge, considering his B58-powered drag 340xi produces 1,000 hp.
Elam also shared with me a message from a BMW engineer who assisted in developing the i8 in Germany.
