Subaru WRX STI Debut Set for January 9; Will Continue to Utilize Gasoline Power

Get ready Subaru family, because your holiday wish may just be becoming a reality. The STI badge is making a comeback.

That’s quite a loaded claim and as you might expect, it comes with several conditions. Nevertheless, the fact stands and it’s not merely a rumor. On Christmas Day, Subaru shared a teaser video on Instagram of a blue WRX featuring an STI badge on its front grille. The video concludes with a reveal date of January 9, 2025. That’s when the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon will take place.

Subaru issued a press statement featuring a computer-generated image showcasing its display for the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon, which is visible above. This image includes all the vehicles Subaru indicates will debut at the event, save one. Subaru neglects to mention a vehicle that is prominently placed at the heart of the display and obscured in the image. It’s a WRX STI sedan. that could also be shown digitally above the concealed vehicle.

The teaser video above displays an STI badge on the front of a current-generation WRX sedan. The wheels on the car from the teaser resemble those of today’s WRX tS available in the U.S. A short running shot of the vehicle indicates it is powered by a boxer engine, audible as it climbs through the revs, and it’s clearly a sedan.

While this may dash hopes for a WRX STI hatchback revival, which a concept revealed in November at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show had enthusiasts buzzing with excitement about, this might just be the beginning. The gasoline-powered hot-hatch concept was positioned mere feet from an STI-badged EV concept, which The Drive was informed is “under consideration” by Subaru’s design lead. The Japanese manufacturer is still evaluating future performance models and is uncertain about the direction regarding powertrains.

The greatest uncertainty is whether this STI-badged WRX will be available in the U.S. market. The Drive reached out to representatives from Subaru of America, but the automaker (like much of the globe) is on holiday break. We’ll update this article as soon as we receive a response.

In one way or another, a new WRX STI will debut shortly after the new year, which is something that fans worldwide can look forward to. It appears that 2026 will commence with a boxer-powered bang.
