Ruf is a performance car manufacturer that typically excels in its endeavors, if not always. Many recognize the brand for its Yellowbird: a Porsche 911-derived, twin-turbo beast that reached 211 miles per hour in 1987. However, its progress didn’t halt there, as Ruf continues to produce extremely potent vehicles influenced by the P-Car. Its most recent creation is an engine—a turbocharged, 4.8-liter flat-eight generating over 1,000 horsepower and 737 lb-feet of torque—which will make its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Currently, the horizontally opposed engine is housed in a CTR3 prototype body that’s been extended by 3.9 inches. Ruf intends to integrate it into a production vehicle in the future, though the exact design of such a car remains uncertain. What I do know is that this prototype looks fantastic, particularly in that black-and-yellow color scheme. Plus, it features a six-speed manual transmission!
Ruf has not disclosed many specifics about the B8 engine, as it is called, only indicating that it was designed and developed in-house. As far as I am aware, there has never been a production vehicle equipped with a flat-eight; only Porsche motorsport specials in the 1960s, making it fairly challenging to replicate anyone else’s work, I assume.
This week at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, there’s a special occasion where onlookers can listen to the engine roar for the first time. (We even received a save-the-date invitation.) The B8 Prototype will ascend the renowned Goodwood hillclimb twice daily from Friday, July 10, through Sunday, July 12. And who could drive it better than the beloved race driver and Top Gear alumnus, Tanner Foust?
I’ll be keeping an eye out for more details, and you can trust I’ll update this blog with the flat-eight’s exhaust sound as soon as it’s available online.

**Ruf Unveils Revamped Flat-Eight Engine Exceeding 1,000 Horsepower**
Ruf Automobile, the distinguished German manufacturer recognized for its high-performance sports vehicles, has garnered attention with the reintroduction of its cutting-edge flat-eight engine. This latest design not only celebrates the brand’s legacy but also pushes the limits of automotive engineering by achieving an incredible output exceeding 1,000 horsepower.
### The Advancement of the Flat-Eight Engine
The flat-eight engine, also referred to as a horizontally opposed engine, features a distinctive layout that facilitates a lower center of gravity and enhanced weight distribution. This design has been a signature of performance automobiles, particularly in racing and high-performance road cars. Ruf’s choice to revive this engine type illustrates its dedication to performance and engineering prowess.
Historically, flat-eight engines have been less prevalent than their six and twelve-cylinder equivalents, primarily due to their complexity and manufacturing difficulties. Nevertheless, Ruf has leveraged modern technology and materials to navigate these challenges, producing a state-of-the-art engine that merges power, efficiency, and durability.
### Key Attributes of the New Flat-Eight Engine
1. **Power Output**: The most notable characteristic of the new flat-eight engine is its power output, surpassing 1,000 horsepower. This remarkable feat is achievable through sophisticated turbocharging methods, enhanced fuel injection systems, and thorough tuning.
2. **Lightweight Design**: By utilizing lightweight materials such as aluminum and carbon fiber, the engine’s architecture reduces weight without compromising strength. This enhances overall vehicle performance and dynamics.
3. **Improved Efficiency**: In spite of its substantial power output, the new engine is designed for greater fuel efficiency. This is a vital factor in today’s automotive environment, where performance must align with environmental considerations.
4. **Sophisticated Cooling Systems**: To cope with the heat generated by such a robust engine, Ruf has incorporated advanced cooling systems that ensure ideal operating temperatures, thereby boosting performance and longevity.
5. **Impeccable Sound Engineering**: The flat-eight layout emits a unique sound that is both powerful and harmonious, appealing to enthusiasts who relish the auditory aspect of high-performance engines.
### Performance and Usage
The reintroduced flat-eight engine is set to power Ruf’s forthcoming models, including possible iterations of their legendary CTR and other custom vehicles. With an emphasis on track performance and road readiness, these cars are crafted to offer exhilarating driving experiences.
Beyond sheer power, the engine’s design permits exceptional throttle response and acceleration, making it a strong competitor on both highways and racetracks. The combination of power, lightweight design, and advanced aerodynamics positions Ruf cars as frontrunners in the high-performance category.
### Conclusion
Ruf’s revival of the flat-eight engine signifies a pivotal moment in the automotive industry, highlighting the brand’s commitment to ingenuity and performance. With over 1,000 horsepower, this engine not only pays tribute to the history of flat-eight designs but also establishes new benchmarks for possibilities in contemporary automotive engineering. As Ruf readies to launch its latest vehicles, both enthusiasts and industry professionals eagerly await the influence this powerhouse engine will exert on the future of high-performance cars.
