Did you manage to get your Rivian stuck, or did someone off-roading with you become immobilized? A winch would certainly be useful, and Rivian recognizes that need.
In a one-on-one interview on The Drivecast set against the backdrop of the R2 launch in Park City, Utah, Rivian Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe shared with The Drive, “a winch is something we’ve desired to implement on an R1 for quite some time.”
Catch the full discussion starting from the moment Scaringe talks about a winch for the R1 below.
We’ve observed patents filed by Rivian with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) concerning a winch at the front of the R1, yet to this point, nothing has materialized.
Scaringe elaborated, “You know, a winch is something we have long wished to incorporate into an R1. However, it poses a bit of a challenge because it significantly impacts regulations; it’s, you know, a challenge to affix a large piece of incompressible metal to the front of the vehicle. Hence, it influences crash and pedestrian protection.”
Unlike Ford, Rivian sells its vehicles directly to consumers, eliminating the dealership middlemen and offering very few third-party accessories. This complicates matters a bit. “Typically, that task is performed by third parties, and the aftermarket can handle these aspects. Since we create our own accessories and are the OEM, it becomes a bit more challenging. But we’ve put considerable thought into it,” Scaringe noted.
In February, Rivian launched RAD, short for Rivian Adventure Department. This is the manufacturer’s new in-house performance division. While Scaringe indicated that RAD vehicles will differ fundamentally, the department won’t be confined solely to vehicles.
“Returning to RAD, I think we must remember that discussion. I believe there are many exciting possibilities when we consider RAD. The second word, adventure, was intentionally chosen over performance. While performance is a component of adventure, adventure encompasses a broader category, allowing for various options. This includes things like winches,” Scaringe stated.
When asked for clarification regarding whether RAD would extend beyond vehicles, Scaringe responded, “Vehicles plus items that enhance the excitement of these vehicles.”
For current and potential Rivian owners, in the words of Lloyd Christmas, “So you’re saying there’s a chance.”
