From the age of about four, I recognized that I was distinct from my peers. I was often on the periphery, observing from afar. Now, as I near middle age, that feeling of knowing—of being different—has never left me.
We exist in a world full of noise where we discover exactly what we look for. If we seek proof that we don’t belong, that is what we will inevitably uncover.
Although imperfect, the conventional ‘life blueprint’ hasn’t entirely vanished into oblivion. According to societal norms and expectations, the route to happiness resembles:
- Obtaining the degree
- Ascending the corporate hierarchy
- Finding ‘the one’
- Having children and creating the ‘ideal’ family
- Purchasing the luxurious home, car, or anything else we desire
- Preparing for retirement and achieving ‘happily ever after’
Let’s Cease Promoting the Fairytale
For many, life’s expectations penetrate so deeply that they seldom pause to consider: Do I genuinely want this existence? Am I merely treading the path I’ve been instructed to follow?
The truth is that, as someone who has gone through it, opting for a life that deviates from the norm can be daunting. At thirty-eight, I’m single, childless, and living on my own.
I frequently mention that everything has its advantages and disadvantages, but in moments of solitude, without external influences, I feel a deep sense of contentment. It’s as if I’ve found home.
The Burden of the Word ‘Should’
I dislike the term “should.” It carries weight because it is laced with fear. More precisely, the fear of disappointing others, of facing rejection, of daring to aspire to something not found on the conventional path, and ultimately, the fear of becoming lost in ambiguity.
I’ve never been a fan of checking boxes. This dislike grew stronger when I realized that each checked box left me feeling more vacant.
Lately, I’ve developed a keen interest in the roots of societal beliefs. We are the sole travelers navigating our own realities. Checklists may seem reassuring due to their perceived certainty, but I can attest that they become stifling when they don’t align with our true selves.
What might occur if you conducted a self-assessment of the “shoulds” in your life? You may be astonished at how frequently the word appears. I know I was.
Embracing Curiosity
Curiosity is a superpower. If individuals posed questions more often than making assumptions, the world would be a gentler place.
I recall a family member stating something similar to, “Everyone wants to find their soulmate, settle down, and start a family.”
Even as a teenager, I sensed something was off about that statement. How could every single person on this planet share the same life path and yearnings?
Allowing ourselves to pose the difficult questions is a long-term gift, as it prevents us from constructing a life where we’re merely playing a role rather than truly experiencing.
- What if I don’t want to become a parent?
- What if having my own home isn’t crucial to my happiness?
- What if [insert your greatest desire] doesn’t evoke the feelings I anticipate?
Tuning into Our Body’s Wisdom
It perplexes me how we separate mental, physical, and emotional health and wellness. There’s no mental well-being without physical wellness and vice versa. The body often understands before the mind grasps it.
The sinking feeling in your chest when you envision a future you don’t authentically desire. The lightness when you envision an alternative that feels more fitting, even if it brings anxiety. This isn’t mere fantasy.
Our bodies communicate with us continuously, urging us to listen. Learning to heed our body’s signals can serve as a guide.
If a choice leaves you feeling restricted, drained, or bitter, it may not resonate with your values. If it results in a feeling of expansion, calmness, or quiet exhilaration, it might be steering you toward your interpretation of freedom.
Certainly, this doesn’t imply the journey will always be simple (it won’t be), but it will belong to you. And therein lies the peace.
Confronting the Fear of Judgment
Let’s face it: choosing a life that deviates from the norm often involves confronting scrutiny. Many people have various opinions about me. I allow them because correcting their views isn’t my priority.
Here’s what I know for certain:
- Family often interrogates our decisions
- Friends may not always comprehend
- People tend to fear change and the unfamiliar
The fact is: People are often more troubled not by our decisions, but by the reflection our choices hold up to them.
When you break free from the script, you remind others that they can choose differently, too. For some, this is inspiring. For others, it feels threatening.
Crafting Your Own Life, Not Someone Else’s
The richness of life lies in its diversity. Your conception of a meaningful life may shift and grow alongside you, and that’s perfectly fine. What matters most is that you consciously decide it instead of defaulting to societal expectations.
Opting for a life that doesn’t mirror everyone else’s is not about rebellion for its own sake. It’s about alignment.
It’s about living in a manner that respects your values, nurtures your well-being, and empowers you to express your true self.
I’m not here to provide catchy tips and tricks. If you sense you’re meant for something greater, know you’re not alone.
So, what will you decide?
If your existence doesn’t conform to a conventional template, you’re not defective. You’re merely responding to the call to manifest something authentic for yourself.
Choosing to step away from the well-trodden path requires bravery. And each time you embrace your own version of enough—your rhythms, joys, and definitions of success—you create space for others to do likewise.
The world doesn’t require cookie-cutter lives; it calls for individuals courageous enough to live in harmony with their hearts.
