Preview Test of the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 6 N: A Comparison with Performance Vehicles

Car enthusiasts are worried, fearing that the electric future will be dull, mute, and devoid of spirit. It’s a valid concern, truly, but relax, friends, because that isn’t, or at least doesn’t have to be, the reality. Hyundai has demonstrated this previously, and underscores it again with the forthcoming 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 6 N EV.

In my capacity as a World Car juror, I had the chance to operate a Korea-spec Ioniq 6 N. Here’s what I can share from my too-brief experience: The aesthetics may invoke strong opinions, yet it is undeniably a sports car that brings joy as it navigates corners while producing an array of captivating sounds.

The Ioniq 6 N refines the updated Ioniq 6, applying the same recipe first introduced in the larger hot-hatch Ioniq 5 N. This entails a dual-motor setup generating 641 horsepower—and while specifications for the U.S. are yet to be confirmed—likely around 568 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels. A robust 84-kWh battery provides the necessary power.

Similar to the Ioniq 5 N, the 6 N incorporates speakers located beneath the hood and at the back of the car to reproduce and project sound in the same locations where a gasoline vehicle would.

These specs translate to bragging rights with a 0-60 mph time of just 3.2 seconds. Yet, based on my experience, the true wonder lies in how this vehicle performs on Angeles Crest.

The front lip spoiler with striking red accents lies beneath intimidating aerodynamic components on the front bumper that flow into the fenders. The side extensions are noticeable but not excessive. The rear view is the most striking, featuring a bumper design that seamlessly continues from the front, without any attempts at a fake diffuser. However, it’s the prominent rear spoiler on swan neck mounts that demands attention. This is a four-door Hyundai sedan—unbelievable.

Within the cabin, it’s typical Ioniq 6 fare. The supportive sport bucket seats with illuminated N branding are less outrageous than the carbon-fiber buckets found in a BMW M3. The dual 12.3-inch touchscreen and digital gauge cluster combination under one pane of glass remains, but it’s redesigned with an interface borrowed from the Ioniq 5 N. Thankfully, physical buttons and knobs persist for climate control and main audio functions.

Cruising onto a Los Angeles side street and then merging onto the freeway, it was clear that the suspension is firm yet yielding as I traversed over a pothole. This was far from deteriorated midwestern pavement, so I’ll reserve judgment for now.

The same driving modes and powertrain sound options from the 5 N were available. With the sound generators fully cranked, it took mere minutes of ascending the canyon for my ears to begin ringing. This vehicle is loud, at least from within the cabin. And I’m not referring to road or wind noise; I mean the speakers projecting sounds associated with the powertrain as the “revs” from the simulated transmission. It was easy to bounce off the limiter constantly if I didn’t shift while in “manual” mode. It all felt remarkably real, particularly in terms of the power curve and delivery, and to some extent, the sounds. I’ve always contended that synthetic sounds in an EV are unnecessary, and while that viewpoint hasn’t changed, it’s clear they contributed to the Ioniq 6 N’s overall experience.

The electric power steering system was incredibly precise with quick responsiveness. My time was limited, but the steering was a joy and conveyed the conditions of the road through the Pirelli PZero tires.

Above all, the Ioniq 6 N felt more balanced and nimble compared to its Ioniq 5 N counterpart. With less weight at the rear, the whole platform exuded neutrality, slightly less tail-happy tendencies, and a lighter touch on its tires.

The Ioniq 6 N’s pricing in the U.S. hasn’t been set yet, but upon its arrival, it’s expected to range between $65,000 and $70,000. At one level, it has no direct rival, but at another, it can be seen as competing with everything from a fully loaded Polestar 4 to a Tesla Model 3 Performance. No other EV in this price range, or possibly any, is as explicitly designed to be an electric sports sedan.

Ironically, I took a Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray for a spin right after my brief experience in the Ioniq 6 N. Without a doubt, the Ioniq 6 N was more enjoyable and engaging despite the Corvette technically being the faster vehicle. I can’t recall any recent BMW M3 making me smile the way the Ioniq 6 N did.

Final verdict will wait until the Hyundai Ioniq 6 N reaches the U.S., complete specs and pricing are revealed, and we spend substantial time with the car. But for now, it’s evident that Hyundai has crafted an electric sports sedan capable of challenging the top contenders while invoking passion and genuinely providing a thrilling driving experience.

### Preview Drive of the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 6 N: A Comparison with Sports Cars

The automotive realm is quickly transforming, with electric vehicles (EVs) leading the charge. Among the newest entrants is the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 6 N, a performance-centric electric sedan that strives to merge the practicality of an EV with the excitement usually associated with sports cars. This article investigates the features of the Ioniq 6 N and contrasts its performance and driving experience with conventional sports cars.

#### Design and Aesthetics

The Ioniq 6 N flaunts a sleek, aerodynamic silhouette that is both contemporary and aggressive. Its low stance, sharp angles, and distinctive lighting elements provide it with a sporty look. The car is based on Hyundai’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), enabling a roomy interior while keeping a lightweight build. This design approach mirrors that of many sports cars, which emphasize aerodynamics and weight distribution for superior performance.

#### Performance Specifications

The 2026 Ioniq 6 N features dual electric motors, delivering all-wheel drive and a combined power output of about 600 horsepower. This capability enables the vehicle to go from 0 to 60 mph in under 3.5 seconds, placing it among high-performance sports cars. The Ioniq 6 N also boasts adjustable suspension and performance brakes, improving its handling prowess on both roads and tracks.

In comparison, classic sports cars like the Porsche 911 Carrera and Chevrolet Corvette are equipped with powerful internal combustion engines that provide thrilling performance. While these models might have a slight advantage in raw power and engine noise, the Ioniq 6 N’s instantaneous torque from its electric motors creates a unique driving experience that can compete with these exalted performance machines.

#### Driving Dynamics

A key highlight of the Ioniq 6 N is its driving dynamics. The vehicle is outfitted with advanced driving modes that enable drivers to customize their experience from comfort to sporty settings. The steering is agile, and the low center of gravity supports outstanding cornering stability.

When compared to sports cars, the Ioniq 6 N offers a different type of engagement. While traditional sports cars often depend on engine feedback and mechanical sounds to enhance the driving experience, the Ioniq 6 N utilizes cutting-edge technology to facilitate a seamless and exhilarating journey. The regenerative braking system also introduces a layer of efficiency, allowing drivers to recover energy during deceleration.

#### Interior and Technology

Inside, the Ioniq 6 N is crafted with an emphasis on driver engagement and comfort. The cockpit features a digital instrument cluster paired with a large infotainment screen that integrates smoothly with varied connectivity options. Premium materials and sporty accents create an inviting ambiance akin to luxury sports cars.

Conversely, many sports cars prioritize performance over practicality, often compromising interior space and technology in the name of weight reduction. However, the Ioniq 6 N delivers a spacious cabin with generous legroom and cargo capacity, making it a more adaptable choice for everyday use.

#### Conclusion

The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 6 N signifies a notable advancement in the field of performance electric vehicles. With its impressive power, innovative technology, and practical design, it stands as a formidable opponent to traditional sports cars. Although the driving experience may differ from that of internal combustion engines, the Ioniq 6 N demonstrates that electric vehicles can provide exhilarating performance without sacrificing comfort or usability. As the automotive industry progresses, the Ioniq 6 N is set to redefine the definition of a sports car in the electric age.
