Porsche Unveils Artificial Gear Changes in Electric Cars, Beginning with 2027 Taycan

It appears that Porsche didn’t merely glean insights from studying the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N—it appreciated what it found and plans to implement those insights into its own electric models. The Drive can now disclose that Porsche will incorporate one of the 5 N’s notable features by introducing artificial gear shifts into its electric vehicle lineup, starting with the 2027 Taycan that will launch late next year.

As per our confidential source, Porsche notified dealer principals of this development in November in Atlanta, and mentioned that dealership trainers have been briefed to prepare sales teams for the arrival of these vehicles in the latter half of 2026. Orders for the 2027 Taycan equipped with the so-called “virtual transmission” are anticipated to commence next August.

We believe you will have the option to activate or deactivate this feature at your discretion. Notably, our source indicated that the artificial gear shifts will not be available to 2026 and earlier Taycans through a software update, due to the absence of physical paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. Porsche declined to provide direct comment on this matter, but their response did not outright deny it.

“Porsche consistently tests and assesses potential new technologies as part of its research and development efforts,” a representative told us. “The decision concerning if and when these technologies might reach the market is based on insights obtained from these exploratory examinations. The same consideration applies to a possible virtual transmission in the future.”

Take note of the term “virtual transmission.” That’s the terminology used by Porsche, not us, and it’s our first encounter hearing Porsche use this term. So, what are the chances that this will be the official branding? It certainly sounds more appealing than “fake shifts,” even if PVT is a tad too close to CVT for comfort. Could we propose V-PDK? Or perhaps what Alex Roy suggested nine years ago in a column on this site: Porsche KünstlichSchaltgetriebe (PKS), or Porsche Synthetic Gearbox.

Back in August, we reported that Porsche had developed a functioning EV prototype with simulated shift points, with final tuning performed by engineers from the company’s renowned dual-clutch and automatic transmission teams. One of Porsche’s prototype fleet managers informed us that the automaker was exploring this idea following feedback from test drivers indicating it could enhance the performance driving experience in EVs, making it feel more “natural.”

“I wanted to dislike it because it’s artificial and fake and everything. I feared that those implementing it were merely software nerds lacking knowledge of how a transmission works and trying to replicate it,” he expressed. “[But] they definitely know what they’re doing. They managed to create a sensation akin to a conventional torque converter gearbox. I couldn’t discern any difference.”

It’s uncertain if the forthcoming Cayenne Electric or the Macan Electric will feature a virtual transmission, as neither currently possesses paddle shifters. However, it’s reasonable to predict that both will undergo an interior update at some point that will enable the technology. We would also be willing to bet on the upcoming electric Cayman receiving it as well.

The addition of paddle shifters for the virtual transmission in the 2027 Taycan will also accompany a significant update to the PCM (Porsche Communication Management) infotainment system. The Taycan is not expected to feature a curved touchscreen like the 2026 Cayenne Electric; however, the updated PCM is anticipated to incorporate elements from the new SUV’s interface.

The Taycan was first introduced in 2019, made available for purchase in 2020, and was revamped with additional power and range for 2025. Stay tuned for Porsche’s official announcement on EV gear shifts sometime next year.
