Now, the actual vehicle used in the film’s driving sequences is being auctioned off. The estimated price? Quite steep.
Julien’s Auctions will present the custom vehicle on November 23, and it’s anticipated to fetch around $5,000,000 to $7,000,000. If this holds true, it will break the previous record for a Batmobile used on-screen, established by the original, a George Barris-crafted 1966 Batmobile that sold for $4.2 million in 2013.
The batty coupe rests on two Impala chassis fused together and is driven by a Chevrolet V8 with a three-speed automatic gearbox. The extravagant fiberglass bodywork was meticulously crafted by hand and, judging by the photographs, is in excellent condition. The vehicle measures more than 19 feet in length, and its gothic design (notice what I did there?) has transformed it into one of the most recognizable and celebrated movie cars in existence.
If you remember, Bruce Wayne’s ride included rockets, smoke bombs, armor plating, and the unique arms that emerged from the sides to entangle villains. I think that last feature is my favorite ability. It even featured a central air-jack allowing the car to be lifted and turned 180 degrees.
