In recent years, I’ve purchased an outrageous number of individual tiramisu cups from our local upscale grocery store (cheers to Kowalski’s). There’s one particular version in their bakery, labeled Dulce De Leche Tiramisu, which is my all-time favorite.
Hence, I attempted to recreate it myself. Here’s a picture of me taking a side-by-side taste test…

I prepared this dish in the traditional whole-pan manner, which is fantastic for impressing guests at dinner parties or festive meals. I intend to include this in my Christmas dessert lineup every year from this point forward.
And here’s the kicker: it’s surprisingly simple to whip up and truly needs to be prepared in advance! THE EASE!
Since this version is alcohol-free, the essential ingredient for top-notch success is using incredibly rich, dark espresso for soaking the ladyfingers. You can technically utilize any strong coffee, or even homemade espresso from powder. But if you want to elevate it significantly, visit Starbucks and order 5-6 espresso shots (decaf, in my case) to soak them in. Alternatively, use an espresso machine if you own one.
You will experience pure joy. The richness! The depth! Complemented by a subtly sweet, creamy layer that has just a hint of dulce de leche – it’s SO amazing.
How To Create This Recipe
Prepare Bowl 1!
Combine egg yolks and sugar, then add mascarpone cheese.
Prepare Bowl 2.
Heavy whipping cream and dulce de leche! I typically use a can of dulce de leche (but not the whole can – just a spoonful).
Merge Bowl 1 with Bowl 2.
This is where the magic happens. The airy, heavy-yet-light, silky texture of this is unbelievable.
Dip Ladyfingers and Layer.
Utilize robust espresso! Utilize robust espresso! Utilize robust espresso! We want a layer of ladyfingers, followed by cream, then another layer of ladyfingers, and finally more cream.
Complete!
I suggest placing this in the fridge for at least 4 hours, ideally closer to 12-24 hours for the finest texture to serve. It will firm up and become easier to slice and serve in neat pieces as it cools in the fridge – plus, the ladyfingers will soak up some moisture and everything just becomes so divine.

- Prepare Bowl 1: Combine egg yolks and sugar with an electric mixer until smooth. The mixture should “ribbon” off the end of the beaters in a silky, steady stream. Aim for a smooth and creamy appearance. Incorporate the mascarpone cheese and mix again until well blended.
- Prepare Bowl 2: Beat the heavy whipping cream on high for 1-2 minutes until it transforms into whipped cream. Introduce dulce de leche, mix again, and add a pinch of salt to taste.
- Combine Bowls: Gently fold whipped cream into the egg and mascarpone mixture. BE AWARE: IT WILL TASTE DIVINE.
- Pan Preparation: Get an 11×7 pan (a 9×13 will also work, or really any shape or size of pan, but I favor 11×7). Use a fine mesh strainer to dust the bottom of your pan with cocoa powder, absorbing excess moisture from the espresso to prevent it from becoming too soggy.
- Layering: Quickly dip ladyfingers in the espresso; turn to coat (I count slowly to 3 while flipping each side – back side, front side, back side again, then remove). Avoid prolonged soaking in the espresso or it will crumble. The ladyfingers should cover the bottom of the pan. Spread half of the creamy mixture over the ladyfingers; repeat with another layer of ladyfingers, then finish with the remaining creamy layer. Top with another dusting of cocoa powder, and/or chocolate shavings.
- Refrigerate: Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge. Allow to set for a minimum of 4 hours, preferably longer at 12-24 hours.
- You’re Finished! Yum! Slice and serve directly from the fridge. Garnish slices with additional cocoa powder or chocolate shavings if desired. Absolutely phenomenal.
Notes
Mascarpone Quantity: If you prefer to buy and utilize one 8-ounce container of mascarpone, that is fine – it will still work. 🙂 I formulated the recipe using 1 1/2 cups of mascarpone (essentially one and a half containers) because I personally enjoy the consistency of that creamy layer with a bit more mascarpone!
