iRacing Unveils New Career Mode on the Horizon with Exciting Features

So far, iRacing has mainly served as a platform for multiplayer racing. Over time, the simulator incorporated AI-driven opponents, and while hot lapping was always an option, the solo player experience was not a primary focus. However, this is evolving with the introduction of a career mode on the platform. It’s been in development for a while—iRacing indicates it still requires “a little more time in the oven”—and few specifics were revealed previously, until now.

iRacing’s August development update is extensive, covering everything that lies ahead for the simulator, from the anticipated arrival of the Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR-LMH and Caterhams, to updates on tracks, performance improvements, and user interface enhancements. It’s all valuable, but the primary emphasis here is the career mode.

According to the team, this experience revolves around “racing, learning, progression, objectives, leaderboards, authentic progression paths, and an extraordinary amount of included content.”

That last detail is particularly reassuring, as the ongoing criticism of iRacing since its launch has been the requirement to pay a monthly or yearly fee to access the service—which isn’t inexpensive, at $14.75 monthly for current members and $124.50 annually—and then needing to purchase each car and track individually in addition to a limited amount of base content. Career mode will break that pattern, as “no additional car or track purchases [are] necessary” for it, and “access [to all content] is exclusive to this mode and does not extend to the broader iRacing service.”

A promising beginning, then. Moreover, the experience appears to be quite expansive, featuring seven distinct careers (with more to be added later) that the developer describes as “a complete game’s worth of content.” These will encompass a range of disciplines and steps in the motorsport hierarchy, ensuring there isn’t a singular path to reach the peak in your desired category, whether you pursue sports cars or oval racing.

Difficulty is adjustable, and progression through the ranks will depend on achieving specific objectives, rather than merely winning races—mirroring actual racing. That said, this is iRacing, so there will be repercussions for consistently falling short, including the risk of having to restart from scratch if you falter too often. Fair enough; this isn’t a game known for being lenient. Honestly, I’m surprised that race lengths will even be adjustable to some degree.

iRacing further notes that when this feature launches, it won’t be fully complete immediately. Deeper elements, such as budget and team management, won’t be available, at least “right out of the gate.” That would be great, but it’s so far removed from what the service has traditionally offered that even providing the foundation for career progression is a significant advancement, not to mention granting players all the necessary content to enjoy it right away.

Regarding an estimated launch date, iRacing’s Greg Hill mentioned in Friday’s blog that “We were very close to making this post an official release announcement instead of just another progress update.” While no specific timeline was given, that remark indicates that this is all very likely to happen soon, so fall seems like a reasonable timeframe for the release. Having recently organized my sim rig again after years away from the track, I’ll be prepared.
