Sim racing can be a costly pastime, yet it’s relatively straightforward to understand. You purchase a steering wheel and pedals, possibly a mount for them, and you’re essentially ready to compete. But what if there’s a lack of space, funds, or if physical interaction with those controls isn’t possible? Gaming accessory manufacturer GameSir might provide the answer: a controller featuring a miniature force-feedback steering disc, driven by a direct-drive motor.
From the moment I discovered this device, I was intrigued. Steering wheel controllers have been around for ages, and their implementation can be inconsistent. However, what sets apart GameSir’s prototype—dubbed “Codename: Swift Drive” and recently revealed at CES 2026—is its force feedback mechanism.
Like the finest sim racing wheels available today, this more compact, thumb-controlled model employs a direct-drive motor, as opposed to gears or pulleys, for enhanced direct and accurate feedback. It also reminds me of Namco’s Jogcon, a controller created by the game developer and publisher for the original PlayStation, specifically tailored for Ridge Racer Type 4.
Similar to the Swift Drive, the Jogcon featured a large rotating disc that would respond oppositely to the player’s commands to simulate oversteering, but the feedback was weak and ambiguous, which isn’t overly surprising considering we are discussing a 30-year-old accessory. The Jogcon had minimal compatibility—only R4, Ridge Racer V, and Infogrames’ V-Rally 2 were explicitly designed to exploit its special functionalities—and although it may be inappropriate to say as a Ridge Racer enthusiast, I never mastered it.
The Jogcon could give a satisfying experience when I executed a drift perfectly, but aligning the vehicle between turns always felt tedious. Additionally, Ridge Racer has never been a series that accommodates realistic vehicle controls effectively. Its physics model is one of the most arcade-like in the racing genre, making it most comfortable with a directional pad or analog stick.
Nonetheless, I feel there’s potential in this concept, and perhaps GameSir can finally bring it to fruition with current technology. In the video shared by the company on X, a player smoothly maneuvers through the Nordschliefe in a Schumacher-era Ferrari F1 car, hitting nearly all the apexes without losing control. I would hope that this direct-drive disc doesn’t exert torque as strong as traditional direct-drive steering wheels, as I can already envision the risk of thumb injury.
It’s worth mentioning those shift lights look great too, even though they’re almost certain to be outside the player’s view of the screen, unlike on an actual steering wheel. It’s the thought that matters. As noted by GamesRadar, the Swift Drive was created by a high school student skilled in 3D printing. They brought their design to the company, and the rest is history. I hope to test it out someday, provided GameSir brings it to market.

### Cutting-Edge Controller Introduces Compact Direct-Drive Force-Feedback Wheel in Place of Conventional Sticks
The gaming world is in constant change, with emerging technologies enriching the way players connect with their favorite games. One of the most remarkable innovations in recent times is the emergence of advanced controllers incorporating compact direct-drive force-feedback wheels, substituting traditional analog sticks. This article delves into the advantages and impact of this revolutionary design.
#### Grasping Direct-Drive Force-Feedback Technology
Direct-drive force-feedback technology connects a motor directly to the wheel, providing accurate and instantaneous feedback based on in-game actions. Unlike legacy controllers that depend on analog sticks, which may sometimes feel detached from the gameplay, a direct-drive wheel offers a more immersive experience. This tech conveys in-game forces, like acceleration, braking, and terrain variations, transforming them into physical sensations experienced through the wheel.
#### Benefits of Compact Design
1. **Space Optimization**: The space-efficient design of these controllers makes them ideal for various gaming configurations, including tighter spaces. Gamers are no longer required to allocate large areas for racing setups, as these innovative controllers can be comfortably accommodated on desks or gaming stations.
2. **Mobility**: Traditional racing wheels can be heavy and cumbersome. The compact form of direct-drive wheels simplifies transportation, making it easy for gamers who participate in events or LAN parties.
3. **Ease of Use**: The user-friendly configuration of a force-feedback wheel might be more approachable for beginners. The tactile feedback aids users in grasping vehicle dynamics more intuitively than traditional sticks, which might require time to learn.
#### Elevated Immersion and Realism
The core attraction of a force-feedback wheel lies in its capacity to foster a more immersive gaming experience. Players are able to perceive the weight of their vehicles, the road’s resistance, and even the subtleties of drifting. This heightened realism amplifies gameplay, making it more captivating and enjoyable.
#### Compatibility and Flexibility
Advanced controllers with direct-drive wheels are intended to work with a broad spectrum of gaming systems and genres. Whether it be racing simulators, arcade games, or even flight simulators, these controllers can accommodate diverse game types, offering adaptability that traditional controllers may not provide.
#### Customization and Individualization
A multitude of these cutting-edge controllers offer customizable settings, enabling players to modify force feedback strength, wheel responsiveness, and button configurations. This degree of personalization guarantees that every gamer can adjust their experience to fit their preferences, enhancing comfort and performance.
#### Conclusion
The transition from conventional analog sticks to compact direct-drive force-feedback wheels signifies a remarkable progression in gaming technology. By delivering greater immersion, portability, and customization, these innovative controllers are poised to transform how players interact with their games. As the gaming environment continues to advance, embracing such technologies will likely become increasingly widespread, paving the way for a new chapter in interactive entertainment.
