Infiniti has been hinting at some captivating concepts recently—rear-wheel-drive sports sedans and high-performance SUVs are reportedly on the horizon for the brand. Current buzz suggests that Nissan’s premium division will introduce an extraordinarily unique, ultra-limited, wild-widebody iteration of the QX80 in the future, but will genuinely enter the performance-luxury market with a slightly toned-down QX80 expected to boast around 600 horsepower.
The QX80 is a massive vehicle that accommodates up to eight passengers. The flagship 2026 Autograph variant weighs roughly 6,200 pounds. Its power source is a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 (VR35DDTT), producing 450 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque—this engine replaced the previous 400-hp V8 when this SUV’s current version launched.
Today, Automotive News reported on Infiniti revising its performance-car strategy around this SUV. According to AN‘s anonymous insider, a new package will be introduced on the QX80 in spring 2027. “It will come with larger red brake calipers, red ‘S’ emblems, and possibly 24-inch wheels,” AN noted. The outlet also received confirmations from Infiniti executives supporting these claims.
It’s uncertain whether Red Sport will function as a performance subbrand name, trim designation, or package title (or something different). The mention of “red ‘S’ emblems” suggests it will utilize the same “S” distinction that Infiniti has applied to several slightly sportier variants in the past. I anticipate Red Sport will be implemented as a package available across various QX80 trims—that would be a savvy approach for Infiniti to set itself apart from other existing sport-luxury subbrands.
Infiniti’s Product Marketing Director Brian Maragno reportedly described this high-performance QX80 as a “first step,” indicating “an added level of performance but not going completely [to the extremities of the QX80 Track Spec Concept].” Anticipate “Noticeable improvements without drastic changes … It’s what’s beneath the hood that counts.” That hints at engine tuning but no widebody. Elevating a 450-horsepower twin-turbo vehicle to 600 isn’t simple, but certainly within reach.
I reached out to our contact at Infiniti regarding this and will update this post if we gain any further insights. So far, there have been no updates concerning the next-gen Q50S sedan that was supposedly hinted at during a dealer conference “with a twin-turbo that roars,” but theoretically, that will also be part of Infiniti’s upcoming performance initiative.
Infiniti has produced some impressive-driving vehicles since entering the U.S. market in the late ’80s, yet has struggled to establish the appealing subbranding crucial to attract buyers willing to invest in performance. Competitors like BMW M and Mercedes-AMG benefit from decades of true motorsport heritage—Infiniti needs to devise a strategy to counter that without the aid of a time machine.
Around a decade ago, Infiniti attempted to promote “IPL” (which stood for “Infiniti Performance Line”), but the program fizzled after just a few years. Another sporting branding effort, “Red Sport,” had a comparable vibe (and a similarly brief existence) but seems more likely to reappear. That being said, I wouldn’t be shocked if Infiniti opts for a fresh name. Maybe “R-Spec” as was explored during that SEMA build?
Infiniti recognizes the need for something refreshing in the mix to start reclaiming market share soon. The brand appointed two new high-level executives this year (Americas VP Eric Ledieu and Marketing/Sales SVP Tiago Castro). All of this suggests a prime opportunity for significant new ventures and eye-catching projects. Here’s hoping they come out as visually appealing as they did at the SEMA show.
