Car enthusiasts have every reason to feel let down by Infiniti, but it appears that the automaker is gearing up to make things right—and is ready to enter the horsepower race. This growth includes its top SUV, the QX80.
At the 2026 New York Auto Show on Wednesday, Tiago Castro, Senior Vice President of U.S. Marketing and Sales for Nissan and Infiniti, informed The Drive that “ideally” they could launch a QX80 with 700 horsepower. However, timing is crucial.
Castro, an aficionado whose first vehicle was a G35 fitted with a manual transmission when he joined Infiniti, remarked “we love that, by the way,” in reference to the Cadillac struggling to produce the Escalade V with its supercharged V8 engine delivering 682 horsepower at a brisk pace. He recognizes the demand for an intensely powered SUV in America.
“We’re exploring, as you might have heard through the rumors, a series of chances for a performance lineup. We envision that Infiniti will resonate well with that type of vehicle. Thus, the QX80 is one of the models we’re working on. I can’t provide a timeline, but stay tuned,” Castro stated.
In March, it was reported that Infiniti is getting ready to unveil a more powerful QX80 with 600 horsepower (and potentially 24-inch wheels) to usher in a new Red Sport performance line. That line will also feature a “high-horsepower” sports sedan with a manual transmission option, as noted by Castro.
“However, here’s the deal: the current QX80 possesses 450 horsepower. Therefore, we desire something that is significantly superior. Should we aim for 700 horsepower? Ideally, can we achieve 700 right away, or is it wiser to aim for something in between? That’s the conversation currently. Timing is essential. Another factor, along with timing, is recognizing the opportunity to capitalize on this. Should we introduce a QX80, for instance, with 600 horsepower? Is there a demand for that? There’s a substantial demand for it,” said Castro.
Castro’s present dilemma? Resolving the question, “Should we bide our time or take action?” according to the executive at Infiniti.
This notion isn’t unrealistic. Infiniti showcased a 1,000-horsepower Nissan GT-R-powered QX80 in Midnight Purple at SEMA in November. Reality? Maybe, maybe not. But Castro is aware of the market, acknowledges its existence, and is excited to see Escalade V sales validating a business rationale.
Ideally, Castro mentioned, there would be a QX80 with around 700 horsepower, “Yeah, but it would probably be a step-by-step process,” remarked the executive.
