The Drive discussed this with Olabisi Boyle, Hyundai Motor America’s vice president of product planning and mobility solutions, at the New York International Auto Show. “Even in this market segment, they prioritize fuel efficiency,” Boyle added.
At present, the Tacoma hybrid achieves the best combined fuel economy of any midsize truck with 23 mpg. The Ford Ranger manages 21 mpg combined with its turbo four-cylinder, while the Colorado and Frontier are limited to 19 mpg combined. It remains uncertain what powertrains Hyundai will provide with its truck, and based on Boyle’s remarks, it doesn’t seem finalized yet:
“You have opportunities with HEV [hybrid], EREV [extended-range electric], ICE, and EV. Thus, we are currently examining those options, all to determine which would be the most suitable. The goal is to heed the customer’s voice in this midsize truck market, and whether they prioritize efficiency over towing, fuel economy, and then make a trade-off decision based on that. The good news is if you have varying powertrains from an HEV standard—or HEV, EV, ICE—optimize that for what this midsize truck buyer desires, especially if it grants us an advantage over the leaders. Therefore, we’re considering … We’re fortunate enough to possess that variety of powertrains to figure out which will be best for that. But at this moment, we haven’t announced what it’s going to be.”
