With respect to Detroit’s Uniroyal giant, the Le Mans Dunlop Bridge stands as the world’s most notable structure made to resemble a tire. It has been an element of the Circuit de la Sarthe in one form or another since the inaugural 24 Hours of Le Mans. However, it’s undergoing a rebranding. Farewell to Dunlop and welcome to Goodyear.
In collaboration with the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), the entity behind the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the tire manufacturer declared this week its plans to rebrand the bridge as part of various updates to la Sarthe set for 2026. A new bridge will be “constructed on the framework of the existing Dunlop Bridge,” as stated in an ACO press release. The Goodyear Racing Club and Goodyear Grandstand will also receive renovations.
To pay tribute to the heritage of the Dunlop Bridge, Goodyear and the ACO plan to contribute a collection of related memorabilia to the 24 Hours of Le Mans Museum. However, the bridge’s legacy will likely persist as people continue to mistakenly refer to the new bridge as “Dunlop” instead of “Goodyear.” Old habits are tough to break.
This significant change follows Goodyear’s sale of the Dunlop tire brand in Europe, North America, and Oceania to Sumitomo Rubber Industries in January 2025. As noted by Racer, Goodyear has been increasing its involvement in endurance racing, making it logical for the company to retain its association with the tire bridge.
Dunlop tires in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) LMP2 class were renamed Goodyear for the 2019-2020 season. Goodyear became the exclusive tire supplier for both the WEC and European Le Mans Series the subsequent year, as well as for the LMGT3 class in both series starting 2024. Michelin provides tires for the premier Hypercar class.
Over the years, the bridge has shifted locations a few times, but it now stands at the top of the Dunlop chicane, close to the pit exit. Images of vehicles passing beneath the bridge are common in magazine features and TV coverage, and the bridge serves as an easy reference point for fans figuring out the track layout. This will remain unchanged, regardless of which tire manufacturer’s name is displayed on it.
