
I’m among the many who appreciate the Ford Maverick. I didn’t purchase one in 2025, but approximately 155,051 individuals (and businesses with fleets) did. Last year marked the tiny truck’s most successful year following a minor refresh, outperforming the Ford Ranger more than twofold.
If you’ve been following closely, you might be aware that the Maverick has exceeded Ranger sales annually since 2022. In fact, the gap was widest in 2024, when Ford sold 131,142 Mavericks compared to just 46,205 Rangers. Much of that disparity can be attributed to the latter’s shift to a new-generation platform; last year provided a clearer indication of the truck’s performance.
It’s promising news for Ford as both Maverick and Ranger sales saw significant increases in 2025 (18.2% and 53.6%, respectively). The Blue Oval brand consistently leads the full-size segment with the F-Series, so everything else is a bonus. The Toyota Tacoma outpaced all in the midsize segment—the U.S. market purchased 274,638 of those last year—but the Maverick outperformed the Hyundai Santa Cruz, the sole other compact pickup in existence.
Ford enhanced the Maverick lineup last year by introducing a hybrid all-wheel drive variant and a performance-focused Lobo model. Consumers practically urged the automaker to create those two variants, and it delivered. That’s been the essence of the Maverick’s journey so far: Buyers have clearly expressed the desire for a small, agile pickup that prioritizes fuel efficiency and practicality. Making it quicker on an autocross course is an added benefit, of course.
The Maverick has moved beyond the ~$20,000 price tag it had at its debut in 2021. It now starts at $29,840 after destination charges, and if you want a decently equipped model, you’ll have to spend a bit more. However, when the average cost of a new vehicle hits $50,000, it doesn’t seem too high.
