Since its introduction in 2021, Ford has been refining its reintroduced Bronco. From new trims and combinations (remember when a manual Sasquatch was off the table?) to entirely new iterations, including the formidable Bronco Raptor. Additionally, we’ve witnessed gradual improvements and modifications to the Bronco’s mechanical systems.
While many (if not all) of these adjustments stemmed from customer input, they were facilitated by another constant in the Bronco’s continual evolution: Racing. That’s why Ford has been discreetly employing its yearly Baja racing expedition as a trial ground for new Bronco components—and they’re set to do it again this year.
In an exclusive direct phone conversation, Ford engineer and off-road expert Seth Goslawski shared with The Drive how the NORRA Mexican 1000 in Baja has established itself as a crucial element of the truck’s ever-evolving mechanical design.
“When we unveiled [the] Bronco, we arrived with, clearly, an unreleased product. It was still a prototype,” Goslawski conveyed to The Drive.
NORRA’s inclusive ethos enabled Ford to effectively enter their test vehicle with nothing beyond its stock equipment and basic safety gear—gear its development prototypes already possessed.
“This all kind of fell into place,” Goslawski mentioned. “Internally, when we’re conducting high-speed, off-road validation, we must have fire suppression, roll cages, fixed-back seats, and [five-point harnesses]. That’s just precautionary for rolls.”
“We’re assessing everything and we’re like, ‘Hold on. We already possess all the necessary safety apparatus for this.’ It’s not an extra cost,” he noted. “So that was advantageous, you know, from that perspective.”
What initially seemed like a no-brainer has since become integral to the Bronco’s engineering agenda.
“We’ve participated every year since and we’ve certainly learned something annually,” he remarked.
Not every enhancement emerging from Ford’s desert adventures captured headlines like its revamped steering system, yet in a vehicle where small, incremental updates have been the norm (rather than a single major mid-cycle refresh), every detail matters. When the team returns to Baja in late April, they will be bringing something notable under the Bronco’s exterior, as Goslawski revealed.
“I wish I could disclose it, but I can’t,” Goslawski stated. “It’ll be apparent. I’ll confirm that!”
We’ll just need to wait until Ford unveils details about the 2027 Bronco. If the company adheres to tradition, we’ll learn more in just a few months. Stay tuned.

**Ford Bronco Engages in Covert Upgrades at Baja Races for Several Years**
The Ford Bronco, a legendary name in the off-road vehicle domain, has consistently represented rugged prowess and exploration. In recent times, the Bronco has experienced a remarkable transformation, re-emerging in the market with a contemporary design and cutting-edge technology. One of the less publicized facets of this resurgence is Ford’s strategic method of benchmarking and enhancing the Bronco via discreet participation in Baja races.
### The Baja Races: A Testing Ground
The Baja 1000, hosted annually in Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, ranks among the most challenging off-road races globally. It draws manufacturers, private participants, and enthusiasts eager to test their vehicles against the unforgiving desert landscapes. For Ford, the Baja races have proven to be an essential testing venue for the Bronco, enabling the company to collect vital data on vehicle capability, resilience, and technology integration.
### Stealth Benchmarking Strategy
Ford’s methodology for benchmarking at Baja has been defined by a low-profile tactic. Rather than boldly publicizing their presence, Ford engineers and designers have discreetly observed competitors and gathered data on various performance indicators. This inconspicuous approach allows Ford to assess the strengths and weaknesses of competitor vehicles without attracting attention to their own evaluation processes.
### Key Areas of Focus
1. **Suspension and Handling**: The rugged Baja terrain presents unique obstacles requiring advanced suspension systems. Ford has utilized these races to assess and enhance the Bronco’s suspension configuration, ensuring it can tackle rough paths and offer a smooth experience.
2. **Powertrain Performance**: The demands of off-road racing call for durable powertrains. Ford has benchmarked engine efficiency, transmission agility, and drivetrain sturdiness, making sure the Bronco can provide power effectively in extreme environments.
3. **Technology Integration**: Modern off-road vehicles increasingly depend on technology for navigation, traction management, and driver support. By closely observing competitors, Ford has been able to improve the Bronco’s tech functionalities, ensuring they cater to the preferences of off-road enthusiasts.
4. **Durability Testing**: The severe conditions at Baja serve as an excellent testing ground for vehicle toughness. Ford has exploited these races to push the Bronco to its limits, pinpointing potential vulnerabilities and implementing necessary enhancements before the vehicle reaches consumers.
### Results and Impact
The insights derived from Baja racing have significantly influenced the Ford Bronco’s evolution. The vehicle’s performance in diverse off-road situations has been markedly improved, resulting in a well-rounded product that attracts both casual explorers and dedicated off-roaders. The Bronco’s standing for dependability and capability has been enhanced through rigorous testing and benchmarking in these extreme conditions.
### Conclusion
Ford’s covert benchmarking of the Bronco at Baja races demonstrates the company’s commitment to innovation and performance. By harnessing the challenges of one of the toughest off-road competitions worldwide, Ford has guaranteed that the Bronco not only fulfills but surpasses the expectations of off-road enthusiasts. As the Bronco continues its progression, its foundations in Baja racing will remain a testament to Ford’s pledge to deliver a vehicle that encapsulates adventure and versatility.
