Some suggest he was doing it to keep boost in F1 cars fitted with turbochargers during that era; others argue he was simply assessing the car’s grip in the corner, looking for extra speed. Yet others think he was functioning as a sort of human traction control system, maximizing throttle output from his race cars.

Sadly, we can’t rewind time to just ask him, so we reached out to our resident racecar driver and high-performance driving instructor, Nik Romano, and provided him with the same vehicle Senna drove in one of his most iconic videos—a 1991 NSX which he aided Honda in developing.

Romano addresses the inquiry from a technical viewpoint and walks us through his on-track tests at California’s Chuckwalla Valley Raceway (which, coincidentally, is currently up for sale). While he makes no claims of matching Senna’s talent, his ultimate finding is that Senna’s rapid throttle fluctuation technique is not only feasible but quite simple to emulate.

However, Romano’s testing can’t uncover the exact reason why Senna originated the technique in the first place—a mystery that may remain forever unsolved.
