“When there is no foe within, the foes outside cannot harm you.” ~African Proverb

It’s just after ten in the morning on a Tuesday.

My damp boardshorts and blue tank top are drying at a rapid pace under the scorching South Indian sun.

I feel vibrant and invigorated after my surfing session in the striking azure, bathtub-warm Arabian Sea.

Consistently riding waves has been my aspiration for the last two years, and here I am doing it. This is quite remarkable considering I never thought I’d surf again.

The trauma and anxiety from a surfing accident a decade ago, which nearly knocked out my teeth, lingered in my body for years, shifting my life’s focus from sports to yoga.

Upon arriving in Kerala, India, my intention was to undertake an intensive ten-week study with my Ashtanga yoga instructor, after which I would return to Rishikesh in Northern India, my previous base.

An unexpected invitation led me to the coastal town I’ve called home for over two years due to the pandemic.

And coincidentally, there are great surf conditions here.

My return to surfing has been gradual and methodical.

For my fiftieth birthday, I gifted myself ten surf lessons.

I resolved to restart as a beginner and took basic courses to gradually reacquaint myself and gain comfort on a surfboard.

An Indian man in his thirties who was part of my surf class asked, “How old are you?”

“Fifty,” I responded.

“I hope I’m still surfing at your age,” he replied.

I suspect he intended it as a compliment, yet I took it awkwardly and pondered why my age mattered.

Now it’s two years later.

I have slowly transitioned from being a beginner to an intermediate surfer.

Sipping hot chai from a Dixie cup by a bustling fishing village road after my morning surf, an older Indian gentleman with grey hair asked me, “What is your age?”

“Fifty-two,” I replied.

His jaw dropped, and he remarked, “I thought you were seventy. You have really poor skin.”

Yes, this genuinely occurred.

And it has happened multiple times.

Every instance has drained my confidence.

Wow, I wonder, how can it be that I appear seventy years old while feeling healthier than I did at twenty-one?

Truthfully, I don’t have good skin genetics. Combined with my fondness for the sun and spending most of my life outdoors, it has left me with alligator-like skin.

I fabricated my age until my mid-forties.

On my forty-sixth birthday, I told a woman who inquired about my age that I was forty. She laughed and questioned if I was sixty.

But this encounter with the chai man prompted me to lie in the opposite direction.

What if I start telling these men I’m eighty-five? I mused as I rode my Mahindra scooter away from the chai shop. This thought made me grin, and instantly, I felt empowered.

Rather than feeling ashamed of my skin, I chose to reclaim it and respond to them.

I no longer care what you or they think about my appearance, and I exert no effort on how I look.

It’s irrelevant to me because internally, I feel fantastic.

I practice the entirety of Ashtanga yoga’s challenging intermediate series six days a week, something I never imagined would be achievable in my forties, and I surf daily.

The young Indian surfers in their twenties are now giving me fist bumps and saying, “You are genuinely surfing and catching some big waves!”

And they have ceased inquiring about my age.

I felt compelled to share this story because it led me to question: Why are we discouraged from aging?

Why is having old-looking skin seen as embarrassing?

Why can’t I embrace wrinkles and grey hair?

This is simply the natural course of the body.

It ages.

So why shouldn’t we look our age? Or, in my situation, even older!

I have resolved to take a stand and shift the narrative.

I am owning my age and my place in the surf lineup while expressing my truth.

We have the right to age.

Embracing Aging: My Take on Aging Gracefully
Aging is an unavoidable aspect of life that brings a distinctive set of challenges and prospects. As we progress through the years, our viewpoint on aging can greatly affect our experiences and overall wellness. Embracing aging with grace necessitates a mindset shift that honors the wisdom and experiences gained over time, while also addressing the physical and emotional transformations that accompany it.
Understanding the Aging Process
Aging is a natural biological phenomenon marked by gradual changes in our bodies and minds. These changes may encompass reduced skin elasticity, alterations in metabolism, and shifts in cognitive abilities. Nevertheless, aging also brings a treasure trove of knowledge, emotional growth, and a deeper appreciation for life. Acknowledging that aging is not simply a decline but a transition can promote a more positive perspective.
Cultivating a Positive Mindset
A vital component of aging gracefully is fostering a positive mindset. This entails reframing our perceptions of aging from negative stereotypes to a more empowering narrative. Instead of considering aging as a diminishment of vitality, we can view it as a chance for growth, self-exploration, and the pursuit of new interests. Engaging in joyful and gratifying activities can elevate our quality of life and instill a sense of purpose.
Physical Health and Wellness
Maintaining physical health is essential for aging gracefully. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and sufficient sleep are foundational elements contributing to overall wellness. Participating in physical activities like walking, yoga, or swimming not only supports physical fitness but also enhances mental health through the release of endorphins. Furthermore, hydration and nutrient-rich foods can bolster bodily functions and increase energy levels.
Emotional and Mental Well-being
Emotional health plays an important role in how we perceive aging. Practices like mindfulness, meditation, and journaling can help alleviate stress and encourage emotional resilience. Establishing and nurturing strong social bonds is equally significant; being surrounded by supportive friends and family fosters a sense of belonging and mitigates feelings of isolation.
Lifelong Learning and Adaptability
Embracing aging gracefully also signifies an openness to lifelong learning and adaptability. The world is perpetually changing, and maintaining curiosity helps keep our minds sharp and engaged. Whether it involves picking up a new hobby, attending classes, or exploring new technologies, the desire to learn can enhance cognitive function and provide a sense of achievement.
Celebrating Milestones and Memories
As we age, it is crucial to acknowledge milestones and treasure memories. Reflecting on our life journey, recognizing accomplishments, and sharing stories with loved ones can nurture a sense of pride and connection. Establishing traditions or rituals that honor our experiences can further enrich our appreciation for the life we’ve lived.
Conclusion
Aging gracefully requires a holistic approach encompassing physical, emotional, and mental well-being. By welcoming the aging process with a positive mindset, prioritizing health, fostering relationships, and staying receptive to new experiences, we can navigate this stage of life with grace and fulfillment. Ultimately, aging is not merely the passage of time; it’s about how we choose to live each moment and the legacy we build along the way.
